This morning you can read the Denver Post's glowing "DeGette relishes stem-cell research triumph" by Michael Riley - in which the only dilemma is not the ethics of harvesting cells from dead unborn babies (or now, thanks to President Obama, spending taxpayer money to do so) but to what extent Denver's liberal Congresswoman will have a successful political career now that her pet issue has been passed into law. Betsy Markey, a Democrat, still has not set up an in-state office to serve her constituents. One of my favorites (originally attributed to conservative thinker George Santayana) is: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I can't think of anything more relevant to our current national political debate than this thoughtful and well-documented essay posted by Ross Kaminsky at Politics West: "The New Deal was a raw deal for the American economy". Dem Lawmaker: Pay No Attention to the Salaries of Colorado State Employees
Jessica Fender from the Denver Post reports on one Democrat state legislator doing the union's bidding to go upstream against the promising trend toward transparency in state government:The salaries of individual public employees could be kept secret under a new bill sponsored by Assistant Majority Leader Sen. Lois Tochtrop and prompted by a database of state employee pay published last year by The Denver Post. Under Senate Bill 49, the public could still see aggregated pay for positions or departments, but there would be no more looking up a particular state employee's salary.... Most likely one of the final big stories broken by the Rocky Mountain News: Gov. Bill Ritter names Denver Public Schools superintendent Michael Bennet to replace Ken Salazar in the U.S. Senate. Honestly, I never gave this possibility serious consideration. My initial impressions? Fresh and outside-the-box, obviously. Bill Ritter definitely outperformed his Democratic gubernatorial colleagues in Illinois and New York with their appointments. But Ritter also has rolled the political dice.
