McInnis-Norton Think Tank Comes to Life with Bizarre, Irony-Rich Poll

Update, 9/25: From this morning's Denver Post: Sean Tonner said CPI "is not for elections" and "is going to be here long past 2010." However, Tonner has a long track record of working on elections, and CPI has absolutely no track record as an independent organization. So despite the obvious explanation that there's no formal relationship between CPI and these campaigns, the claim is dubious. Gulp -- I even agree with the Dead Guvs on this one. I'd been wondering when the new Colorado Policy Institute (CPI) would come to life and do something. So what did they finally do today? Publish a white paper? None of those yet. Update 2: NRSC responds again: "Your correction is incorrect. Neither of the folks you mention are NRSC fundraisers in any way. We do have a fundraising department but neither of the people you mention work for the NRSC or are contracted by us. Magda El-Tobgui raises money for Sen. Cornyn personal leadership PAC and she has a number of clients as well – but that’s all separate and apart from the NRSC." So the official organs of the NRSC are not connected to these fundraisers, but NRSC chairman John Cornyn is. You can decide how important the technical distinction is. Is Denver Post Trying to Help Clear the Field for Jane Norton, Too?

Five weeks ago the Sunday Denver Post editorial page featured a piece by columnist Vince Carroll that made short shrift of the U.S. Senate candidacies of Ryan Frazier and Ken Buck, while making the pitch for Bob Beauprez. The Post's management clearly was using its editorial heft to tout Beauprez as the GOP's great hope to defeat Ritter-appointed incumbent Michael Bennet. Well, two weeks later Bob Beauprez officially announced he was NOT tossing his hat in the ring. So now the Post is rolling out the red carpet for Jane Norton. Jane Norton Is In U.S. Senate Race: It’s Kind of Like Deja Vu All Over Again

Eighteen days ago I told you Jane Norton was in the U.S. Senate race. Today it flies back at me like a bad case of deja vu. So goes the world. Politico's Josh Kraushaar notes:She announced her candidacy on her newly-launched campaign website, and said that she will formally kick off the campaign next week after talking to supporters across the state. I look forward to hearing about the events in which she talks to supporters across the state, who and where her supporters are, and how she addresses Republicans' questions and concerns. Michael Bennet to the Left of Barack Obama on Government Health Care?

There's little doubt that the respective positions are primarily being driven by anything other than political convenience, but recent events appear to have pushed Colorado's appointed U.S. Senator Michael Bennet further to the Left on health care than Barack Obama. Yes, let me repeat that: Michael Bennet has moved further Left than Obama on health care, essentially because the junior senator is eagerly talking about pushing the U.S. toward a government health care takeover while the President is at least backing away from the term "public option". “Reverse-Coronations” No Better; Who, if Anyone, Wins Grassroots Momentum?

On Friday Ken Buck was ready to bow out of Colorado's U.S. Senate race. By Sunday he had received a new boost from more than 200 emails and calls from "activists in Colorado" urging him to stay in -- a figure he shared with me in a short phone interview he was gracious enough to give this afternoon. "Everyone who called has been positive and supportive and encouraging," Buck said. When asked if he was surprised by the outpouring, his single-word answer was "overwhelmed." Not much else came out of the conversation except that Buck's campaign is looking beyond the October reports. "I have a longer term goal than quarter-to-quarter fundraising," he said.
