Word is spreading about the new online petition calling for the National Republican Senatorial Committee to butt out of Colorado's primary election and call for a fair and open process. Night Twister makes a strong statement. Yesterday I reported that Ryan Frazier has decided to stay in despite the pressure to bow out. And now I'm learning that early reports of Ken Buck's announced departure from the field may be premature. Buck is getting many calls from his supporters urging him to stay in, too -- apparently enough to give any candidate pause. I'm not sure that many people expected the outrage from Colorado's grassroots to be so instant and loud. If the people want to ensure they have a strong voice in a fair primary electoral … [Read more...]

Another Memo to NRSC: Jane Norton Isn’t Exactly a Prolific Fundraiser
What justifications will the NRSC offer for backing Jane Norton for Colorado's U.S. Senate seat over a series of Republican primary challengers (e.g. Ryan Frazier and Ken Buck? A major one will be an alleged fundraising prowess that her rivals supposedly lack. Of course, Norton has never won election on her own. The only time she ran for statewide office was on the coattails of popular incumbent Bill Owens in 2002. But she did have her own committee "Friends of Jane Norton" (search the Secretary of State website, be sure to check the "Include Terminated?" box). She edged out the Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Bill Thiebault in total fundraising: $99,471 to $90,085. But put her modest advantage in context. In a race that … [Read more...]
I Hope the Rumors of Premature NRSC Colorado Endorsement Are Unfounded
Update, 5:00 PM: Complete Colorado has uncovered evidence of the NRSC registering web domains for Jane Norton, which unfortunately would seem to confirm the rumors. Writing at the People's Press Collective, El Presidente echoes my sentiments and notes that the popular outrage from grassroots Colorado conservatives is starting to build. A well-placed rumor is circulating that the National Republican Senatorial Committee is planning to endorse former lieutenant governor Jane Norton upon her official entry into Colorado's Republican U.S. Senate primary in the next few weeks. I sincerely hope the rumors are unfounded. The NRSC has no business coming into this race so early in the process to endorse anyone. It wouldn't matter if they … [Read more...]
Sources: Jane Norton Is In
Yes, it appears that Colorado's former lieutenant governor won't need the full 30 days to make up her mind. I have received word from a reliable source or two that Jane Norton is definitely going to announce her candidacy for U.S. Senate. My guess is this will mean Bob Beauprez opts to stay out of a crowded phone booth field. Initial reactions? Norton doesn't bring Beauprez's baggage of the disastrous 2006 campaign or firsthand experience with the fiscally profligate Republican Congress of the early-to-mid 2000s. She brings administrative experience in state government, whereas the current two frontrunners in the race Ryan Frazier and Ken Buck have experience in municipal or other local government. … [Read more...]
Bob Beauprez Entry Could Turn GOP Senate Primary into Two-Man Race
The rumors look as though they indeed are true: Politico talks to former Congressman Bob Beauprez and learns that he is "leaning towards running" for the seat held by appointed U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. Looking back at the 2006 debacle that was the campaign for governor, Swing State Project raises the serious, fair, and open-ended question of whether Beauprez is the man to beat Bennet. Senate Watch over at Rocky Mountain Right offers similarly subtle sentiments. My initial reaction? … [Read more...]
How Many U.S. Senate Candidates Can Fit in a Phone Booth? … A What?
If things keep up, we soon may be unable to fit all of Colorado's Republican candidates for U.S. Senate in a phone booth. (How long before the phone booth loses broad cultural recognition? Where does Clark Kent go to change his identity? But I digress....) Already in the race are Ryan Frazier, Ken Buck, and Cleve Tidwell. I received an email announcement today that Crested Butte attorney Luke Korkowski is officially on board. Senate Watch at Rocky Mountain Right reports that Tom Wiens is about to enter the race. And I'm hearing rumors that former Congressman Bob Beauprez soon may throw his hat into the ring. If it all develops, we may start needing some sort of official guide to keep track of who's who and what's what. Regardless, the … [Read more...]
Michael Bennet’s Silence on Health Care Tax Matches Record of Hollowness
In its latest release, the Ryan Frazier for U.S. Senate campaign effectively goes after a weak link in incumbent appointee Michael Bennet's political armor:GOP Senatorial candidate Ryan Frazier today asked why Senator Michael Bennet has not stood up to the Democratic Congressional Leadership in Washington to protect Colorado small businesses and jobs from being destroyed due to an expensive surtax being proposed to help pay for President Obama’s health care reform legislation. The Democratic Congressional leadership has proposed a 5.4 percent surtax on families making more than $350,000 a year, or individuals earning $280,000, to pay for health care reform. “A proposed surtax to pay for health care reform will place an enormous … [Read more...]
New Gallup Poll Provides Clear Road Map for Republican Themes in 2010
Gallup yesterday posted the results of a very interesting poll that shows far more Americans self-identifying in a conservative direction than in a liberal direction. Brian Faughnan at Red State has it about right concerning the broad message of the poll:I think it’s a growing distrust of what they view as the liberal agenda of this Congress and this president. At the same time, when you break down the poll on an issue-by-issue basis, Rossputin makes a great case that on most issues Americans are tending to move in a libertarian direction. It's hard to say how much the broad shift against environmental policies that harm the economy and against restrictive immigration policies are the result of our current economic situation versus a … [Read more...]
Say It Ain’t So, Cleve Tidwell
Here's a good bit of important advice to candidates for major political office that apparently isn't self-evident to all -- Don't go posting comments online under a false identity:Cleve Tidwell was posing as someone named "Craig Platon" and posting about how "he gave me and everyone else that waited in line all the time we needed and seemed only interested in what I had to say." He also describes himself as a "warm individual." This is a little narcissistic even for a would-be politician. It is troubling to say the least that a candidate for United States Senate has no apparent ethical qualms with posting as imaginary people supporting himself. Simply posting under a psuedonym [sic] and dropping a comment saying something positive about … [Read more...]
U.S. Senate Candidate Ken Buck Responds to Campaign Rumors
This morning a post appeared on Rocky Mountain Right about the first announced Republican candidate in Colorado's U.S. Senate race:Reports are trickling out that [Ken] Buck has split with Phase Line Strategies, a Republican consulting firm made up of GOP veterans who would have probably been fulfilling most of Buck's fundraising and communications needs, and that his campaign manager may have departed as well. Details are sketchy at this point, but the reports are coming from enough directions that it appears very likely to be true. Earlier this afternoon I called Ken Buck and recorded our conversation, to get a clearer picture of the story directly from the source. … [Read more...]
