Hugh Hewitt, Meet Josh Penry

First, it was Michigan-Ohio State football. Then it was the whole litany of Cleveland sports. The near-weekly disembarkation into the world of popular and classic movies. Of late, national radio host Hugh Hewitt has shown another entire topic about which he would be better served staying silent as opposed to demonstrating his ignorance: I speak of Colorado politics. Memo to Hugh -- Get away from the coasts, get out of the Beltway and the smog, and visit Rocky Mountain flyover country again. In the meantime, read up on Josh Penry, and watch this national video clip from Fox News: … [Read more...]

Colorado Political Temperature Survey Results to be Unveiled Monday

Thank you to everyone who participated in our September survey of Colorado's political temperature. We had 500 people take the survey -- down somewhat from last time, but still a very strong showing. We appreciate it very much. Some already have started to ask about the release of the results, so let me share the (tentative) plan. Here goes: Over the weekend we will compile and organize the top-line results for public display, and I will post them here first thing Monday morning. This should include how the candidates fared (and compared to the July survey), as well as which issue statements received the strongest expressions of agreement or disagreement We have outsourced some cross-tab analysis to see how support with some … [Read more...]

Clear the Bench Colorado Joins Hugh Hewitt Today on National Airwaves

Last night I kindly berated national talk show host Hugh Hewitt for his ignorance pertaining to Colorado Republican politics. Apparently, he's in our state today and has an opportunity to listen, learn, and change his ways. One guest who is scheduled to appear on his show this afternoon (sometime between 4 and 6 PM on 710 KNUS) is Matt Arnold to promote his important project Clear the Bench Colorado. Go here to find out more about Matt's radio appearance and the cause you should consider supporting. … [Read more...]

Vince Carroll: Not So Fast, We Have a GOP U.S. Senate Primary, After All

What a difference a week makes! Last Sunday Denver Post editorial page editor Dan Haley laid out the red carpet for Republican Jane Norton's U.S. Senate campaign. Today, in the printed space directly beneath Haley, columnist Vince Carroll took a look at Norton's "clunky" bio page and "languid and subdued" introductory video, and had to say Ummm... Not so fast: … [Read more...]

The Continuing Scott McInnis Interview Chronicles: Statesman Edition

First there was Caplis & Silverman. Then there was Colorado's Morning News. Now we have a couple of strange Scott McInnis gems in writing (no transcripts, no audio) from his recent "InnerView" with the Colorado Statesman. First, in regards to closing the budget gap:You need to say, “Okay, here’s what we have.” The state Senator up there, Dan Marostica. He’s got some ideas, and he’s a numbers guy. That’s what you need. Frankly, the governor should have hired that guy the first day he was in office. Those are the kind of people that I’m going to put in place. No doubt gubernatorial candidate McInnis meant Representative (until recently) Don Marostica. Hey, mistakes on details like title and first name happen. But why … [Read more...]

Official Jane Norton for U.S. Senate Announcement to Come Tuesday AM

Update, 9/11: About 24 hours later, the Denver Post catches up -- but does offer some more detail about Norton's first day of scheduled appearances. Let the campaign good times roll.... Not that this news will shatter any earth, but you can say you read it here first: Jane Norton is making her candidacy official next Tuesday morning, September 15, with a 9 AM appearance in the Denver Tech Center followed by an 11 AM appearance in Colorado Springs. To little surprise, the "exploratory" phase of the campaign appears to be a brief formality. A cynic might conclude that Norton wanted to publicize her announcement while the September 2009 Survey of Colorado's Political Temperature was still open (as of 2:30 this afternoon, there have … [Read more...]

Denver Post Editorial Sunday: The Good, The Good, and The Far-Fetched

I can only imagine very few readers of Sunday's Denver Post opinion page shrugged their shoulders with a ho-hum. All stacked together on good old page 3D of the Perspective section, the collection of pieces had to evoke some wholehearted assent, some serious disagreement, or both. Let's go with the bad news first, the lead fantasy-ridden editorial "Public option is critical to reform":Opponents also say the public option is a ruse meant to facilitate a government takeover of health care. On the contrary, we think it will give the insurance industry every incentive to innovate and find efficiencies, best treatment practices and ways to make their rates more attractive to businesses and policy holders. Based on what, the wishful … [Read more...]

Time of Year to Remember Colorado Teachers Have Membership Options

Are you a teacher or other employee in a Colorado public school? Is your friend or loved one? Then this post is especially for you.... Most Colorado public schools are back in session now. And with the school year underway, it's time for teachers to be reminded of their professional membership options -- in many cases, while they still have time to decide whether and how to spend their hard-earned money on dues. Check out the new post on Ed Is Watching about the Professional Association of Colorado Educators (PACE) and, of course, the Independent Teachers website for all the information you need. … [Read more...]

Why is Scott McInnis Making So Much Hay of Early Obvious Poll Results?

What does it say about a primary candidate that his two primary messages seem to be: The incumbent is wrong; and I'm ahead in the polls. Well, those are the messages I'm getting from the Scott McInnis for governor campaign. The first message is obvious: no complaints there. The point to ponder is why #2 is one of the primary messages . It isn't surprising to any serious political observer that the former 3rd District Congressman has greater name recognition than his rivals. So why keep touting two polls -- at least one of them commissioned by the McInnis campaign -- that say exactly that? … [Read more...]

Obama Speaks to School Children: Sharing My Thoughts with the Post

The Denver Post this morning has up a story by Jeremy Meyer filled with local reaction to the news of Obama speaking to school children next Tuesday. Meyeer quotes several people in the story, but my remarks to him yesterday didn't make the cut. Here's more or less what I said:This has all the signs of the Obama cult of personality. Parents who don't want to subject their children to the organized hero-worship of a controversial political figure certainly can't be blamed for wanting to pull them out. The decision should be made at the local school level, but in any case the parents at least should have the opportunity to opt out. That's perfectly appropriate. … [Read more...]
