The Phoniest of Phony Polls

Jared has already done a terrific job of highlighting the most recent advocacy of Denver's lefty online community ProgressNow, so I don't need to devote any extra time rehashing their claims that he has so effectively and articulately refuted. On their website, ProgressNow is touting its sponsored online poll showing 98 percent in favor of Governor Bill Owens signing HB1042, the measure that would require all medical facilities (including religious hospitals with deep pro-life convictions) to provide "emergency contraceptives" to rape victims. Jared highlights well the idiocy of their self-selecting survey, but it only becomes more absurd when you read the way ProgressNow words the question: Should Governor Owens allow victims of … [Read more...]

An Insecure Agenda

The homosexual advocacy group Equality Forum is organizing a celebration event at Philadelphia's Independence Hall on the 4th of July that will include commemorations of "gay icons in U.S. history," a recent news report says. Among the "outed" figures? You guessed it... Abraham Lincoln. "[Former N.J.] Governor [James] McGreavey showed mainstream Americans that homophobia has kept those who seek elected office in the closet," said Malcolm Lazin, executive director of Equality Forum. "These public officials include Abraham Lincoln, who saved the nation, emancipated slaves and founded the modern Republican Party." Lazin said he has read The Intimate Life of Abraham Lincoln. "As a gay man and an amateur American historian, I find the … [Read more...]

Tancredo Won’t Back Down

Despite Hugh's strong admonition and best hopes, Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo won't back down from his irresponsible and increasingly infamous "bomb Mecca" comments. He demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of our enemy and what strategic objective could be accomplished by even floating the idea as a potential deterrent: In an interview, Tancredo said he did not intend to offend moderate Muslims, whom he calls the "best hope" of bringing terrorists to justice. "When we bombed Hiroshima, when we bombed Dresden, we punished a lot of people who were not necessarily (guilty)," Tancredo said. "Not every German was a member of the Nazi Party. You do things in war that are ugly." He stressed that he was not advocating an … [Read more...]

Ssshh! Maybe no one will notice the poll…

Jennifer Harper of The Washington Times reports on a CNN/USAToday/Gallup poll released yesterday regarding public sentiment on the issue of same-sex marriages: When asked whether they thought same-sex "marriages" should be recognized by the law as valid and come with the same rights as traditional marriages, 68 percent of the respondents in the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll said they should not. Twenty-eight percent said same-sex "marriages" should be valid and 4 percent had no opinion. The survey of 443 adults was conducted March 18 to 20. A similar poll by Gallup last year found that 55 percent thought homosexual "marriages" should not be valid, while 42 percent said they should be recognized. In addition, 466 adults were asked … [Read more...]

MSM Reporter Goes Candid

Straight from the reporter's mouth Lynn Bartels, political writer for Denver's Rocky Mountain News, gives some personal insights in a long Q & A she had yesterday over at The Dead Governors website. Bartels proves to be candid, often witty and self-deprecating, but above all fair-minded. She may lean a little left of center but she's by no means an agenda-driven journalist. That being said, it is interesting to point out what Clay has already highlighted: Bartels stated flat out that Bob Beauprez can win any office in Colorado he runs for. That must have been a real downer for the Dead Governors and their "Draft Hick" campaign to get the Denver mayor on the statewide ballot. Another interesting passage in the interview is the … [Read more...]

Major Coffman Chooses Higher Path

The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News have put in their two cents worth about State Treasurer Mike Coffman's decision to step down and serve a seven-month stint in Iraq. The Post finds it easy to salute elected Republicans, when they decide to leave the country for awhile, even if it means participating in a military action that the Post editorial board is less than comfortable with. At least they left this stern admonition: We don't think it's appropriate for Coffman's party to use his decision to seek a partisan advantage. Coffman has our good wishes as he prepares for his second service in Iraq, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the treasurer's office. They couldn't resist leaping into the political … [Read more...]

Surveying the ‘Sphere on the Roberts Nomination

The President's nomination of John Roberts to fill Justice O'Connor's vacancy on the Supreme Court - the first such change in 11 years - is such an intriguing and momentous development that I thought I'd take a moment to survey what some of the leading bloggers are saying about it. Kind of a snapshot in time. My own opinion? The President made the best of this selection, and good conservatives can join reasonable centrists and even people on the center-left of the political spectrum to applaud it. But here's what others are saying (in no particular order) - first, from the Right: The gents at Powerline are ecstatic: It's a great day for conservatives and for America. Thanks to President Bush for nominating the best person for the … [Read more...]

What a Difference Poll Questions Make

A new Zogby poll released contrasts with the findings of earlier national surveys on the Terri Schiavo case. When the questions were asked in a way more reflective of the actual situation, the true complexities of the case and the American majority's clearer moral sensibilities emerge. No one with intellectual honesty can say with a straight face that Zogby is part of the vast right-wing conspiracy. But the Democrat-leaning pollster demonstrated the simple effectiveness of asking specific and relevant questions. Here are some key findings, as reported by Life News, the first suggesting popular approval for erring on the side of life: The Zogby poll found that, if a person becomes incapacitated and has not expressed their … [Read more...]

Prognosticating an ’06 GOP Comeback

It's been a few months, but the Mile High Delphi crew is back online with their insightful and statistical analyses of Colorado politics. Two interesting summary quotes from a recent Blogicus Maximus post: "...[We] put the probability of the GOP taking back the State House at 80%" and "...[We] will begin our probability of either party controlling the State Senate next year at 50%." Read the basis for their predictions. Colorado Republicans have serious reason for hope and optimism in 2006, but a lot of hard work, discipline, and funds are going to be needed to make Mile High Delphi out to be a true genius. … [Read more...]
