Former US Congressman and current Republican National Committeeman Bob Schaffer weaves his own family into a clear, straightforward, and common sense case for Social Security reform: Our five-year-old daughter Mary was named after her great-grandmother Mary who is in her nineties. Chipping Away at CEA’s Whitewash
The Colorado Education Association (CEA), the state's largest teachers' union as well as the largest roadblock in the path of true education reform, was called to the carpet today in an awesome column by the Denver Post's David Harsanyi - "True or false: Union backs school choice." Of course, the answer is a resounding "False," though you have to wade through the garbled doublespeak of union officials to see it clearly. Great advice (cough) for Colorado Republicans from consultant Katy Atkinson, via leftie columnist Diane Carman in today's Denver Post: support the forever tax increase known as Referendum C. Most of the column comes off as smarmy, coy, elitist, and patronizing. But what did you expect? Conservative Republicans in Colorado have always known that Carman has their best interests at heart... right! Remember this piece from the Post a couple weeks ago? Controversial Conservative Professor Reportedly Threatened
Developing story from CSU-Pueblo. Stay tuned... It appears that Dr. Dan Forsyth - the professor cleared of charges accusing him of creating a "racially hostile environment" in his classroom for holding conservative views on immigration - has not experienced the last of trouble. Credible sources indicate that a liberal faculty colleague of Forsyth has widely disseminated a threatening e-mail around campus. The author of the e-mail, Chicano Studies Professor David Sandoval, declared his efforts to bring radical activists in to Pueblo to "address the bigotry done" by Forsyth. True Democrat Colors Shine Through
It is fairly safe to say that Colorado voters gave Democrats the majorities in both houses of the state legislature last fall because of their promise to "fix" the state's budget problems. Events this week on two fronts show why voter trust was misplaced. First, Democrats tried to renege on a small compromise they made in HB 1194 (aka the "no refund for you" Romanoff rip-off) only a day after the House approved the bill to send to voters as Referendum C on this fall's ballot. Part of the deal to make HB 1194 more fiscally palatable involved the suspension of 19 different tax credits during the plan's five-year tenure. Kansas Approves Marriage Amendment
The results from across the country keep pouring in: Kansas yesterday approved a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman with 70 percent in favor, a typical result and one that closely matches a virtually unreported CNN/USAToday/Gallup poll from last weekend showing 68 percent of Americans holding that view. Early reports from yesterday indicate that voter turnout in the most populated areas of The Jayhawk State was brisk. Similar reports appeared this morning: The issue appeared to bring out more voters than usual for a spring election.
