It's a Friday, and I couldn't resist highlighting this Washington Tims story from yesterday on a new Harris survey that gives some not-so-shocking insights into what women want in their men. Some of the findings (with my comments in italics): • 75 percent of women said their ideal man buys his grooming products at a grocery store or drugstore, not a salon. A salon... what's that? • 72 percent of women said their ideal man spends his free time doing home-improvement projects. My wife prefers that I try to fix things when possible but realistically just hopes that I don't break anything in the process. • 41 percent of women said their ideal man spends his time watching sports. Yes, but only once in awhile... • 47 percent of women … [Read more...]
This Might Just Leave You Scratching Your Head
I received the following report concerning the latest meeting of the Denver Metro Young Republicans: Karen Bauer, one of three people removed from President Bush’s Social Security meeting posed as a Rocky Mountain News journalist while grilling Jay Bob Klinkerman at a regular meeting of the Denver Metro Young Republicans. Klinkerman is chair of the Colorado Young Republicans, a group unaffiliated with the Denver Metro Young Republicans. Ann Imse, staff writer for the Rocky Mountain News and photographer Evan Semon, escorted Bauer into the meeting. "They were waiting in the restaurant area until our meeting began. They then joined our meeting in progress in a private room. They declined signing our guest form or to introduce … [Read more...]
I Guess I’m One-Fifth… Something Else
You Are 80% AmericanYou're as American as red meat and shooting ranges. Tough and independent, you think big. You love everything about the US, wrong or right. And anyone who criticizes your home better not do it in front of you! How American Are You? A fun quiz to take, for sure... Hat tip to Jonathan … [Read more...]
Speaking of New Blogs
It's time to pay kudos to Backbone America's addition to the blogosphere, with Senator John Andrews lending his wit and wisdom to the great political conversations of our day. Contributions so far have also been made by Sean Duffy and Beth Skinner. Another one to add to the blogroll.... … [Read more...]
Harsanyi Hits the Airwaves Opposite Hewitt
Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi - and friend of the Rocky Mountain Alliance - will be guest co-hosting today on the Caplis and Silverman radio show: 630KHOW from 3 pm to 7 pm locally here in Denver. Doubtless the range of topics will include the ongoing cloud of controversy at the University of Colorado, still looking for a replacement for President Betsy Hoffman. The RMA has issued its endorsement of Hugh Hewitt to fill Hoffman's shoes. One ventures to ask whether Hewitt's name would come up in an on-air Harsanyi conversation, since his guest-hosting gig will be competing (mostly) in the same time slot. Even if you are a devoted Hugh listener, though, tune into 630 KHOW at least from 3 to 4 pm. If you can't do that, surely … [Read more...]
Songs for Snowy International Reflections
A log from snowed-in metro Denver... Have Americans again lost interest in international events? Has too much time passed since 9/11 and the subsequent Afghanistan and Iraq wars so that people think we've achieved some sort of detente, normalcy, or new Pax Americana? Have we overcome the naivete - so typical of our nation - regarding threats from abroad and political developments a half a world away? Many of those who spend lots of time online know that there are dozens of excellent bloggers keeping us regularly attuned to events in Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, North and South Korea, China, and elsewhere. Their work is tremendously appreciated, as I must confess my own tendencies to get absorbed with national and even … [Read more...]
First Hearing on Teachers’ Union Complaint Today
Wayne Rutt and Paul Marrick, the co-founders of Parents for Truth, have their first appearance before a judge today at 1 p.m. in Denver. The hearing was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. today but was postponed in favor of hearing a series of procedural motions. Marrick and Rutt, who filed the original complaint against Poudre Education Association (PEA) - the local Fort Collins teachers' union -, for violating a series of state election laws have filed a motion to expand the complaint to include both the statewide union (CEA) and the local Poudre School District. Their lawyer also filed for a continuance (a delay of hearing), citing that the school district dragged its feet in responding to their subpoenas and Open Records request for … [Read more...]
Memo to the Left: Sit Down and Take a Deep Breath
Today's news? A military investigation of Guantanamo confirms that no torture occurred... not even close (though look for a few rabid lefties to focus on the humiliating case of Mohammed al Kahtani, the 20th hijacker, forced to wear women's clothes, endure verbal abuse, and experience sleep deprivation). A pro-growth Bush economy roaring back to life drastically lowers the estimate on the federal deficit. (Both Congress and the President need to continue reductions in discretionary spending, however.) With news like this, the partisan White House press corps and Capitol Hill Democrats continue to scream like petulant children for the head of Karl Rove on a platter - calling them "circling sharks" may be giving them too much credit. … [Read more...]
New Schiavo Development
Will this be interpreted as judicial activism? Another amazing development in the Terri Schiavo case, while I'm still recovering from the shock of agreeing with Jesse Jackson on something. Can there be a good ending to all this? All I can say is that my human eyes can't see it. She's been too long without any water. And what does the 11th Circuit Court see now that it didn't before? And what does this mean for the feeding tube status? Questions waiting to be answered... … [Read more...]
Radio Interview Tonight
I have been invited to be interviewed tonight on Backbone Radio with Senator John Andrews. If you're in the Denver metro area, tune in to 710 KNUS AM at 7:30 p.m. to hear us talk about the costliness of teacher strikes. I know you won't be going out to practice your golf game this evening, so it's either me or the TV movie of the week. I'll let you decide. If you're not in the Denver metro area, you can listen online by going to the 710 KNUS website and clicking on the "Listen Live" icon in the upper-right corner. The radio invitation comes on the heels of my Monday Speakout column - "Don't pay teachers for days on strike" - in the Rocky Mountain News. That opinion piece stemmed from my research which led to the Independence … [Read more...]
