Remembering General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914)

In recent years, one of the more famous heroic figures of the American Civil War -- popularized by the Pulitzer-winning novel Killer Angels and the movie rendition Gettysburg -- citizen-professor-soldier Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was born on September 8, 1828. Today is the 181st anniversary of his birth. Chamberlain, of course, was the hero of Gettysburg's Little Round Top (1863) as commander of the 20th Maine, was wounded six times in battle, the general who presided over the surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox, Governor of Maine from 1867 to 1871, and President of Bowdoin College. If you want to learn more, I recommend In the Hands of Providence, a very good Chamberlain biography. … [Read more...]

Jane Norton Is In U.S. Senate Race: It’s Kind of Like Deja Vu All Over Again

Eighteen days ago I told you Jane Norton was in the U.S. Senate race. Today it flies back at me like a bad case of deja vu. So goes the world. Politico's Josh Kraushaar notes:She announced her candidacy on her newly-launched campaign website, and said that she will formally kick off the campaign next week after talking to supporters across the state. I look forward to hearing about the events in which she talks to supporters across the state, who and where her supporters are, and how she addresses Republicans' questions and concerns. Because as Westword blogger Michael Roberts points out, her Web bio is long on former lieutenant governor resume (much longer than her Wikipedia entry) but largely short on details that concern … [Read more...]

Bizarre Absences: What is Going on with the Scott McInnis Campaign?

Update, 9/8: Sources tell me that there have been other recent noteworthy Scott McInnis absences from events attended by his rivals Josh Penry and Dan Maes. The McInnis absences include the Fountain Labor Day Parade, and an event hosted by a grassroots group called ROAR America. I understand there may be more, but these are the ones I have been able to confirm so far. What in the world is going on with the Scott McInnis for governor campaign? First, there was the series of strange interviews. (For a nice contrast, check out Josh Penry's recent one-on-one with the Colorado Statesman.) Then the insecure trumpeting of obvious poll results. Next came the evasion of the state party straw poll. But like the strange interviews, it turns out … [Read more...]

Time of Year to Remember Colorado Teachers Have Membership Options

Are you a teacher or other employee in a Colorado public school? Is your friend or loved one? Then this post is especially for you.... Most Colorado public schools are back in session now. And with the school year underway, it's time for teachers to be reminded of their professional membership options -- in many cases, while they still have time to decide whether and how to spend their hard-earned money on dues. Check out the new post on Ed Is Watching about the Professional Association of Colorado Educators (PACE) and, of course, the Independent Teachers website for all the information you need. … [Read more...]

Liberty on the Rocks, Meet NPR: Response to Obama Care Speech

Over at Free Colorado, Ari Armstrong highlights the prominent role played by members of a local Liberty on the Rocks chapter in today's NPR Morning Edition story (complete with audio). Three LOTR members in particular responded to Obama's speech last night on health care reform to a joint session of Congress. Quotes below... … [Read more...]

Pat Waak on Vandalism: “I Never Said Which End of the Other Side It Was”

The morning of this week's deplorable attack that shattered windows at the Democratic Party Headquarters in Denver, state Democratic chairwoman Pat Waak took advantage of the occasion to launch an outrageous broadside against Obama Care opponents:“We ought to be having a serious, conscientious debate about what’s best for the country,” Waak said. “Clearly there’s been an effort on the other side to stir up hate. I think this is the consequence of it.” Complete Colorado has posted audio from yesterday's edition of Colorado's Morning News on 850 KOA. Listen to the interviewers give Waak an opportunity to retract her remarks: … [Read more...]

Announcing Straw Poll Evasion Another Strange Scott McInnis Campaign Turn

What's the deal with Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis skipping out on this month's state party candidate forum and straw poll? And then making a big deal out of it? Apparently, the strange interviews weren't enough. The candidate touting broader polls he commissioned showing his own name recognition advantage won't stand next to Josh Penry (whom I support) and Dan Maes (whom I respect) to gauge the support of the party faithful. Who does he hope is going to elect him? In search of satisfactory answers, read Westword's account of an interview with McInnis campaign spokesman Sean Duffy. If the trajectory of this race continues to any extent in the direction it's going, it's not a long matter of time before Josh … [Read more...]

NRSC Explains Norton Domain Registration, A Few Questions Remain

Decline of “Freedom Philosophy” at the Colorado Springs Gazette?

Could a rare newspaper editorial voice for liberty -- a long-time fixture on Colorado's Front Range -- be on its last legs? Sean Paige writes about news of bankruptcy at the Colorado Springs Gazette (where he used to be the editorial page editor) and the possible demise of the "Freedom Philosophy" on the newspaper's opinion pages. Like the demise of the Rocky Mountain News, this too would be a sad development for Colorado. But if it does come to pass, is new media ready to step in the gap? Paige's own Local Liberty Online is one place to start, but those are huge shoes to fill. … [Read more...]

Your Family (and Mine) Can’t Afford Barack Obama’s Policies

Hold on to your shirt (and your wallet), as you read new Heritage Foundation research by Brian Riedl:The Office of Management and Budget has released its annual mid-session review that updates the budget projections from this past May.[1] They show that this year, Washington will spend $30,958 per household, tax $17,576 per household, and borrow $13,392 per household. The federal government will increase spending 22 percent this year to a peacetime-record 26 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). This spending is not just temporary: President Obama would permanently keep annual spending between $5,000 and $8,000 per household higher than it had been under President George W. Bush.[2] Driven by this spending, America will run its … [Read more...]
