Great piece by Vince Carroll in today's Denver Post on Barack Obama's Supreme Court appointment:If racial and gender bigotry truly have no place in American public life today, then Judge Sonia Sotomayor, during her confirmation hearing for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, needs to utterly repudiate her 2001 assertion that "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Putting that statement "in context" or explaining what she "really meant" will not do. A Day of Transition
Today is Barack Obama's day. I see it as a break from taking critical stock of his policies and recognizing both the peaceful transition of power that still is a tremendous blessing to our Republic and the historic nature of installing a non-white person into the nation's highest office. This two-fold recognition is a fulfillment of the great and remarkable promise of the Declaration of Independence that gave birth to our nation. Yet the surviving spirit of the Declaration and the importance of Liberty embodied and codified in our Constitution depends more on the character and vigilance of the American people than on the cultish popularity of its leaders. Update: An astute observer has corrected a factual mistake. James Madison wrote "much of" - not "most of" - the Federalist. Alexander Hamilton wrote more, though Madison wrote many of the key essays that frame the meaning of Union. My faux pas.
