A preeminent challenge lying ahead for our elected Congress to tackle is the mounting debt and out-of-control spending that grew under Republican leadership and accelerated in the past few years with Democrats in charge. No one is better prepared to help equip you to do your citizen's part in taking on this challenge than my friends at Mothers Against Debt. Their new video on the idiocy of unemployment benefits as economic stimulus is a real hoot. Enjoy: … [Read more...]

Colorado Education Association Members Can Get EMO Political Refunds Until December 15 Deadline

Give $250,000 in member funds to the 527 group Accountability for Colorado, with a track record of negative political smears -- a group denounced by candidates in both parties and by Denver Post columnist Vince Carroll for maliciously distorting the truth? Check. Remember: The deadline to request the Every Member Option political refund is December 15. CEA members can go directly here to make an online request of the $39 refund. Frank McNulty and New GOP House Leadership Team Prepare to Step In
As pointed out on the Denver Post blog, Colorado's new majority Republican state house caucus is proceeding with leadership elections tomorrow. At 10 AM, to be precise. Colorado Democrats have protested, saying not all the decisive races have been resolved to their satisfaction. Sure, I appreciate it's hard to accept being in the minority after the past six years on top. But looking at the situation clearly, it's extremely difficult to see how any of the close races left will shift in either direction. Why? Well, for one, Republican challenger Bob Boswell is more likely to surmount his deficit against Greeley Rep. Jim Riesberg than outgoing Democrats Dianne Primavera or Debbie Benefield are to hold on to their seats. (And the deficits … [Read more...]
Wishful Numbers in Tim Leonard’s State Senate District 16 Race?
Although it's not crucial to winning the majority in the state senate -- the Democrats have held on -- it seems like we have a small dispute over the actual standing of the race in District 16, where conservative Republican Tim Leonard and liberal Democrat Jeanne Nicholson are locked in a close count. Lynn Bartels reported at 10:30 this morning in the Denver Post (H/T Complete Colorado):And in a multi-county seat stretching from the western suburbs to mountain towns, Democrat Jeanne Nicholson was up by six votes over Republican Tim Leonard, according to a tweet from Sen. Morgan Carroll, D-Aurora. A Tweet? Could we use some real confirmation, please? Outlets like 9News and The Denver Channel (Bartels' own Denver Post election results page … [Read more...]
CNN/Time Poll Partisan Sample Skews Results to Dems by 5 to 7 Points
...Of deconstructing polls there is no end; and much political analysis is a weariness of the flesh. (A gold star to the first reader who catches the reference) It's less than a week until the midterm election. We're being bombarded by polls. But simply put, they're not all created equal. In some cases, the problem is easier to see than in others. Take for example the new CNN/Time poll on Colorado races with a mix of credible and incredible top-line results (H/T Complete Colorado). The Denver Post's Curtis Hubbard picks up on some of the survey schizophrenia. This one merits a closer look. First, the seemingly credible: Republican Ken Buck leads appointed Democrat incumbent Michael Bennet in the U.S. Senate race, 47-46. Then … [Read more...]
Democrat Desperation Diaries: Treasurer Cary Kennedy Edition
Update, 10/29: Jessica Corry has a more thorough take on the topic in her latest Huffington Post column. She writes: "Shame on Cary Kennedy, now revealed to be just another typical career politician who will do anything to save her job." Read the whole thing. It's the last week in October. A pro-Republican Tea Party wave is coming through Colorado and the nation, carrying away Democrat officials who broke faith by pouring on their Progressive policies, spending your money recklessly and racking up debt. Some Democrats are more out of touch than others. For state treasurer Cary Kennedy, there has been her revealing moment of wanting to "drive a stake through" your constitutional taxpayer protections. But generally she has projected a … [Read more...]
Evidence Indicates Any Deal-Seeking Came from Dan Maes’ Direction
Why exactly is minor party-Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes and his dwindling cadre of political backers trying to foist on Colorado a story that he bravely resisted efforts to buy him out of the race? It sure looks like the victim card is being played, unfortunately without the truth to back it up. The bottom line is that any proposed deal came from Maes and his allies, and that at all points Tom Tancredo and his closest advisers have communicated clearly that no job will be given to 10-point Dan Maes to buy him out of the race. What started out as an innuendo-laden note from Dan Maes insider Joe Harrington's Facebook page (and echoed on Maes' own page) was effectively disinfected by the sunlight of Rossputin's clarifying … [Read more...]
Colorado Ballot 2010
Thankfully, the list of statewide ballot initiatives facing Colorado voters in 2010 is shorter than in 2008. Here are my thoughts and insights on each of the measures. Here's who I am if you want to know where I'm coming from. Two of my primary sources for information on the ballot measures are the official Colorado blue book produced by the state legislative staff and Ballotpedia. As they are made available, I will post below links to ballot guides from others whose opinions and insights I respect, though we all won't completely agree: Joshua Sharf (HD 6 candidate) People's Press Collective Jimmy Sengenberger Backbone America (John Andrews) (Disclaimer: All opinions expressed below are solely those of the author and not … [Read more...]
Yes, Ken Buck is Ahead, DSCC Poll Isn’t Equivalent to Rasmussen (Not Close)
The Denver Post's Michael Booth is to be commended for his efforts: He's working really hard to bolster the flagging campaign of appointed junior U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. Maybe it's some sort of "Michael B" bond. Who knows? Though artificially inflating Bennet's hopes in the end isn't a terribly kind thing to do. Seriously, a new Rasmussen survey comes out today showing Ken Buck breaking the 50 percent mark at 51-43, confirming a trend of independent polls that have the Republican challenger beating Bennet outside the margin of error. Yet Booth leads with a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) poll showing Bennet with a statistically insignificant lead of 48-46. … [Read more...]
Ed Perlmutter Casts Deciding Adjournment Vote Against Tax Relief
We already knew that my Congressman, liberal Democrat Ed Perlmutter, can twist himself into knots defending the Death Tax. But today Perlmutter went further, providing the decisive vote on the House floor (210-209) to adjourn Congress to keep from voting on extending the Bush tax cuts that would provide relief to my family and millions of others. Thirty-nine Democrats voted against adjournment to give a chance to debate tax relief. But not Ed Perlmutter. The official response from the campaign of Republican challenger Ryan Frazier:“Ed decided to skip town early rather than vote to get our nation’s economy back on track,” Tyler Q. Houlton, Ryan Frazier’s Campaign spokesman, said. “Ed would rather put his reelection chances above the … [Read more...]
