Politics West points out a newly-released survey from a Democratic polling firm finds that support among Coloradans for both Barack Obama and "senior" U.S. Senator Mark Udall is slipping. The Public Policy Polling firm is slated to release results today for newly selected Senator Michael Bennet, up for re-election in 2010. What I'll be looking for first is not the favorable-unfavorable rating but the percentage of Colorado voters who know enough about Bennet even to form an opinion, and whether they ironically might view the man as indecisive. Months Later, Michael Bennet Still Vacillating Over Union Card-Check Bill
More than two months ago I noted that the union card-check bill had put newly selected U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in a bind. Three weeks ago I observed that Bennet might be finding relief in the fading prospects of the legislation. But Big Labor proponents haven't backed down, and business leaders are in the fight for the duration. So where does that leave Michael Bennet? Perlmutter Earmarks Ahoy!
Unfortunately, Congressman Ed Perlmutter is on the earmark bandwagon. His requests for my hometown of Arvada were: $6,000,000 - Garrison St flood control $600,000 - Wadsworth Trail $1,400,000 - 56th Avenue bypass $2,600,000 - Clear Creek Overflow project These sound like fine projects that need funding, but they aren't a federal concern. Instead of using federal funds in this way (raiding our savings accounts through inflation and our wallets through taxation), Ed Perlmutter should leave us to solve local issues locally. … [Read more...]

It seems almost certain that Democrat Senate President Peter Groff has tried to remain mum about the news of his impending departure to join the Obama administration in Washington to avoid distraction from an especially difficult budget process in the state legislature this year. But the cat's out of the bag now. Kind, classy words in the Denver Post from the Republican opposition:"Washington's gain is our loss," said Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray.... To put a trillion dollars into perspective, I decided to do a little imagining. Just suppose that you could use a 53-foot semi-trailer to represent 1 million dollars. One million dollars won't fill a trailer, but every time you see one, you know it stands for a million dollars. The Existential Impact of Government Motors on a Native Michigander
The whole sad affair with General Motors, the federal bailout and now the Presidentially-orchestrated dismissal of the company's CEO, strikes a little bit closer to home with me. I grew up in southeast Michigan. My dad worked more than 30 years for the automaker. Many, many people I knew worked for GM or one of the contract suppliers. GM was a significant part of a way of life. So after yesterday's announcement, please forgive me if my head is still spinning this morning. I'm not quite able to put it all into words, but thought I'd give it a first crack.
