(H/T Complete Colorado) The new Colorado News Agency gets the scoop and breaks down the details on a series of bills and debates that will make one of the hottest stories out of the legislative session this year: the proposed repeals of late fees in Governor Bill Ritter and the Democrats' 2009 FASTER legislation. Pardon the pun, but the state's fiscally conservative bloggers definitely need to get up to speed on this issue... and fast. … [Read more...]
Senator Mark Udall Making His Case to be Added to “Dirty Politician Filter”
Way to keep it classy, Mark Udall! From a 9News report (H/T Complete Colorado):Sen. Mark Udall is wading into a hotly contested special election on behalf of a fellow Democrat, and it's his use of the word "tea-baggers" that has upset some conservatives. The fundraising e-mail is on behalf of Martha Coakley, a Democrat, who is facing Republican Scott Brown in a tight race to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts. Udall's e-mail reads, in part, "Martha's opponent is receiving millions of dollars in support from far-right tea-baggers across the country, claiming him as one of their own."... A campaign representative for Udall, who is not up for re-election until 2014, issued a statement in response to an inquiry by … [Read more...]
Treasurer Candidate Walker Stapleton Extends GOP Fundraising Lead
Update: Incumbent Democratic state treasurer Cary Kennedy raised $70,000 in the last quarter and has $173,674 on hand -- which puts her squarely between Stapleton and Ament. With state campaign finance reports due today, GOP state treasurer candidate Walker Stapleton boasts another strong fundraising quarter:DENVER—Republican businessman Walker Stapleton announced today that he has now raised more than $310,000 for his 2010 campaign to unseat Democrat incumbent State Treasurer Cary Kennedy. That figure includes over $65,000 raised in the last quarter of 2009. Stapleton's efforts leave him with more than $270,000 cash on hand.... A quick glance on the Secretary of State's new campaign finance reporting site shows that Stapleton's … [Read more...]
Rasmussen: Michael Bennet Dropping Like a Rock, Jane Norton Expands Lead
In December I noted that Rasmussen's survey of the Colorado U.S. Senate matchups showed a significant momentum swing for Republican Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck. One month later, the results from Rasmussen tell a somewhat different story. If you have been reluctant to describe fellow Republican Jane Norton as the frontrunner ... well, "facts are stubborn things," John Adams once said. Norton has pushed her lead over incumbent appointee Michael Bennet from 9 points to 12 and is nearly at 50 percent (49-37). Buck's lead over Bennet ticked up one point to five (43-38), while the recent invisible campaign of Tom Wiens has grown a similar lead of 44-38. … [Read more...]
House Minority Leader Mike May Blends Seriousness, Humor in Opening Speech
Update: I've also uploaded a copy of the opening speech from Mike May's counterpart in the Senate -- minority leader Josh Penry, who sounds a strong note on the need for government reform. He's not running for governor, but when it comes to this issue, go Josh go! Today kicks off the legislative session down at Colorado's State Capitol. Because of a federal grant deadline, action is already swiftly underway on some education bills. Meanwhile, Republican House minority leader Mike May helped to kick things off with a speech that shows not only his party's serious face to bring some fiscally conservative backbone to tackle some of the state's looming problems, but also his own good humor. Full text of the speech below the fold: … [Read more...]
Colorado GOP Leaders Show Serious Face Entering Legislative Session
Yesterday evening the Colorado Republican legislative staff hosted a blogger round (or square as the case may be) table discussion on some of the looming issues on the eve of the legislative session. Topics of discussion ranged from public employee pensions to medical marijuana to government transparency. Rather than provide a recap, I'll point you to the thoughts of liberal blogger David Thielen -- whom I finally met in person and sat next to during the discussion. Though he was outnumbered about 15 to 1, Thielen held his own and was treated well. His Colorado Pols essay reviewing the event was honest, fair-minded and lighthearted -- which: … [Read more...]
Treasurer Candidate Ali Hasan’s Approach Misguided, Attacks Unserious
It was disappointing to see a copy of the latest Colorado Statesman and read the headline: "Hasan opens treasurer's race by attacking his foes." Just last week I welcomed Ali Hasan to the Republican state treasurer's primary and re-issued the admonition to stay focused on incumbent Cary Kennedy. Not that Hasan or any other candidate has any special need to defer to my wishes. But in a potentially promising year for Republicans and fiscal conservatives, with an incumbent Democrat at the end of the tunnel, the advice is very sound. So seeing the newcomer to the race blasting fellow Republicans J.J. Ament and Walker Stapleton as "fiscal liberals" in the first paragraph of the story just about made my head spin. Reading the substance of … [Read more...]
Scott Brown “Massachusetts Miracle” Could Spell Doom for Michael Bennet
So I take a weekend away from blogging, and the national political landscape quaked with a Democrat-sponsored poll showing Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown in a statistical dead heat with Democrat Martha Coakley. Yes: in Massachusetts! Now let's be honest: odds are still against a GOP win in the Bay State, but the fact that victory is in the sights a week before the special election to replace Ted Kennedy sends a loud message in itself. Now word leaks that the Democrats actually are considering delay of seating Brown, should he win, to take another step toward cramming Obama Care down our collective throats. Redstate blogger Dan Perrin aptly describes the political consequences of such a tactic as "lighting a torch while standing is … [Read more...]
Betsy Markey: I voted against TARP before I didn’t vote on it at all
Chalk it up to a slip of the tongue or wishful thinking or just the growing pressures of the 2010 campaign season, but Colorado's Democratic 4th District Congresswoman Betsy Markey got a little bit confused yesterday morning in her appearance on 600 KCOL's "Mornings with Keith and Gail," a local Fort Collins radio talk show: It's not exactly a flip-flop at the caliber of 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it." But it does make you wonder a bit.... … [Read more...]
Three-Way GOP Race for Treasurer: Stay Focused on Cary Kennedy
Overshadowed by the big breaking news of the evening, a third Republican has thrown his hat into the ring for the state treasurer's race: Ali Hasan. Rocky Mountain Right reported it six days ago, but the official announcement came by press release earlier this afternoon, with news of a key endorsement:Avon small businessman Ali Hasan will formally announce his intention to be Colorado’s next State Treasurer in seven cities, over two days, starting in Colorado Springs. Republican Minority Leader Mike May will be on hand in Colorado Springs to endorse and introduce Ali Hasan. The 3-way Republican primary for state treasurer still leaves me undecided, but hoping that the primary stays clean and remains focused on unseating Cary "drive a … [Read more...]
