Update, 12/16: Part 2 is now available as well. Rossputin performs a great service with a two-part, in-depth investigation of the "Federal corruption and cover-up in the prosecution of Cory Voorhis." Part 1 is released this morning -- for those less familiar with the story, Rossputin does a thorough job summarizing events. In addition, he introduces a lot of evidence I haven't seen before that shows in detail how the case against Cory Voorhis was corrupted. Excellent work all in all. And its release coinciding with the news of Stephanie Villafuerte's withdrawn nomination for U.S. Attorney, the report is extremely fresh and timely. … [Read more...]

Cory Voorhis Fundraiser Sunday
I just received this email from a friend. Since supporting Cory Voorhis a worthy cause, and the event is very timely and in the neighborhood, here goes:18 months ago, federal agent Cory Voorhis was accused of breaking the law for bringing to light a dangerous practice of plea bargains for illegal immigrants. Just last week, a jury found him not guilty of those charges. But even after being found innocent, he and his family still face over $250,000 in legal bills. This great American needs our help! On Sunday, come meet Cory and support his Legal Defense Fund! Bring your friends and forward this message to help spread the word. Where: Abrusci's Restaurant 3324 Youngfield Wheat Ridge, CO When: Sunday, April 20, 2008, 1:00 pm – … [Read more...]
After Political Prosecution, Cory Voorhis Still Able to Say “God Bless America”
In his latest Human Events column, Colorado's own Ross Kaminsky highlights the amazing character of Cory Voorhis, the politically-targeted federal immigration agent who last week was exonerated in a case that stems back to the 2006 election:Cory Voorhis looked me in the eye and said “God Bless Americaâ€. It was a remarkable statement from a man whose life has been turned upside down by a justice system which was hijacked by politicians and turned loose on this unsung American hero. When I said to Voorhis that it was remarkable he still felt that way, he pointed to his American flag lapel pin and said, still choked up from the news five minutes earlier, “This is what I stand for.†Five minutes earlier, at about 1:45 PM on … [Read more...]
Stephanie Villafuerte Nomination Resurrects Voorhis Affair for Bill Ritter
From today's Denver Post:President Barack Obama has nominated Stephanie Villafuerte to be Colorado's next U.S. Attorney. Villafuerte, currently deputy chief of staff to Gov. Bill Ritter, previously served as Denver's chief deputy district attorney. She worked on Ritter's campaign and has focused on community outreach as his deputy chief of staff. [emphasis added] Remember Stephanie Villafuerte? Still scratching your head? While with Ritter's 2006 gubernatorial campaign, she worked with the Denver DA's office as they accessed the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database to go after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Cory Voorhis. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation went after Cory Voorhis for accessing the … [Read more...]
Voorhis Exonerated: Bad for Ritter, But Legal Ethics Reform Still Needed
Good news today on a story I have not covered nearly enough: ICE agent Cory Voorhis has been found NOT guilty, and it didn't take the jury long to decide. The question is what the fallout means for Gov. Bill Ritter's political future. The verdict is a small step in increasing my faith in the justice system, though it would be naive to ignore the real, long-term solution for Colorado: legal ethics reform. … [Read more...]
“Strange Method” of Cashiers Check Deposit Raises Questions for Stephanie Villafuerte, Ritter Inaugural Fund
You thought Governor Bill Ritter's ethical troubles with his inaugural fund were old news? You thought the saga of Ritter staffer and Obama US Attorney nominee Stephanie Villafuerte would only make one headline today? Well, my friends, things may have grown much more intriguing with the revelation in a new investigation from my Independence Institute colleague Todd Shepherd: … [Read more...]
Evading Serious Questions Ties Bill Ritter and Obama Nominee Villafuerte
President Obama's nomination of Stephanie Villafuerte to be Colorado's next U.S. Attorney has put Governor Bill Ritter in an unwanted situation. Serious questions remain unanswered about Villafuerte's role in the political smear of federal ICE agent Cory Voorhis during the 2006 election that led to his near conviction. But Ritter thinks it's too much trouble for us to bother with the questions now:She also declined to answer questions this week about whether she provided the FBI with a complete accounting of any contacts she had with the DA's office about [illegal immigrant Carlos] Estrada-Medina. A message and detailed e-mail left by The Post for Villafuerte were returned instead by Evan Dreyer, spokesman for Ritter. He said Villa fuerte, … [Read more...]
Bill Ritter Leaving a Trail of Legal Defense Fund Victims in His Wake
Greg Kolomitz, once upon a time the campaign manager for Gov. Bill Ritter, is now embroiled in a bitter legal showdown with his former boss over campaign violations totaling $300,000 (or more). Interestingly, Kolomitz's laptop computer (containing relevant, important records) disappeared under mysterious circumstances just as the story went public. Now the Denver Post reports that Greg Kolomitz now is raising money to defend himself legally against alleged "false accusations," apparently made by Bill Ritter:The e-mail plea never mentions Ritter by name, but leaves no doubt about who the family thinks is responsible for the "false" accusations that led to an ongoing investigation of Kolomitz. "We have found ourselves in a legal battle … [Read more...]
Wayne Allard Honored, Tom Tancredo Gives Red Meat to GOP Faithful
From the GOP Convention in Broomfield... After Dick Wadhams' opening remarks, the unity theme kicked off with a video tribute to retiring U.S. Senator Wayne Allard, followed by words from Allard's wife Joan and Senator Allard himself. If the crowd was slowly coming to life before, retiring Rep. Tom Tancredo's soundbite speech - which strikes themes of energy independence, secure borders (the mere mention of "Cory Voorhis" electrifies the crowd), and American greatness, with several quips about Barack Obama thrown in for good measure - gets the energy rising. On a down note, turnout at the GOP Convention is not exactly stellar (but a quorum has been achieved). More to come, as I need to get my alternate credentials updated to … [Read more...]
