It's official: the Democratic Party has married its political future to American military defeat, voting 218-212 in the U.S. House of Representatives today to send a gift telegram to Islamist terrorists and Iraqi insurgents. Trapped in their political bubble, Congressional Democrats have convinced themselves that the United States can't prevail in establishing even a measure of stability in Iraq and thus are working to fulfill their own hand-wringing prophecies: "The American people have lost faith in the president's conduct of this war," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "The American people see the reality of the war, the president does not." I'm left to wonder if Pelosi and her cohorts didn't come away from the last election … [Read more...]

Democrats: Paroled Felons Vote, No Proof of Citizenship Required
More substantive blogging later, but it's always instructive to open up the Denver Post and read that the Democrats' idea of cleaning up elections is giving paroled felons the right to vote. Of course, the Post article omits mention of a basic fact in the Senate Bill 83 debate. You have to read the Rocky Mountain News to learn that Democrats defeated an amendment requiring proof of citizenship to vote. Not that any of us should be surprised by these revelations. On the point of paroled felons, the Rocky reports: But Sen. Peter Groff, D-Denver, had a different view. Groff, who amended the bill to allow parolees to vote, argued that state law bans anyone confined behind bars from voting. "When you look at moving people from prison … [Read more...]
Mr. Ritter, inquiring Democrats want to know…
Inquiring minds want to know: How does Governor-elect Bill Ritter plan to pay for his socialized health insurance mandate? Inquiring minds include many respected members of his own Democrat Party: Sen. Bob Hagedorn, D-Aurora, called Ritter's proposal a "budget buster" and Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, head of the Joint Budget Committee, said it could work, "but only if you don't do the math." Hagedorn said it would cost an estimated $240 million a year just to cover the 120,000 children in Colorado who don't have insurance. "It's a budget buster, but we have to decide on our priorities. That's not doing anything but funding those 120,000 kids and getting them enrolled," Hagedorn said. He said providing health care to all … [Read more...]
Chieftain Slams Down Democrats
The editorial board of the Pueblo Chieftain rips State Senator Peter Groff and his Democratic colleagues for the economic and political travesty that is Senate Bill 66, which would require all businesses with 10 or more employees to offer those employees unpaid leave to attend functions at their children's schools. Key quote: We know of many working parents who have been able to arrange with their employers to get time off to attend important school functions for their children. Employers who value their individual employees often make allowances through scheduling to give workers time to take care of their youngsters’ school affairs. In any event, though, the state should not mandate this arrangement. Giving it the color of law … [Read more...]
Illegal Immigration: The Democrats’ Millstone?
More analysis later, but this story from the Rocky Mountain News speaks for itself: yesterday, statehouse Democrats voted party-line in committee to kill seven bills that tackled the issue of illegal immigration head-on. Examples? - One bill prohibited giving public contracts to businesses that knowingly hire illegals - One bill authorized training of local law enforcement in the recognition and detention of illegals - One bill required employers to learn how to verify worker eligibility and fire those found ineligible It will be important to remember come November which party blocked these and other important immigration reforms at the State Capitol: the Democrats. … [Read more...]
Democrats Heading For Social Issues Trap
All evidence to the contrary, Colorado's Democrat "wine-and-cheese" crowd think they have not only the more fashionable but also the more popular positions on all the so-called social issues. When Republicans make a proposal to allow school districts to teach intelligent design, a collective tsk, tsk arises from the elite quarter. We're reminded of Democrat Speaker Andrew Romanoff's poignant quote from the 2005 legislative session about budgets vs. bestiality, and the sound of snickers can be heard between sips of Merlot. But when Democrats announce a proposal to give marriage benefits to homosexuals, the "wine-and-cheese" crowd fawns in awestruck delight. "Forget the budget, and accountability to the taxpayer, now THIS is a winning … [Read more...]
The Ball is in the Democrats’ Court
The release of a poll by the Denver Chamber of Commerce confirms what an earlier poll commissioned by the Independence Institute and Colorado Club for Growth revealed: the citizens of this state do not support Speaker Andrew Romanoff's plan to resolve its budget problems. Any proposed plan that is passed through the legislature must be approved by Colorado voters, and according to the Chamber's poll only 37 percent like Romanoff's solution. Governor Owens' plan, which isn't much better insofar as it wants to modify the TABOR limits, receives 55 percent of support in the same poll. House Minority Leader Joe Stengel (R - Littleton) reacted quickly to the news, saying there was no chance the Republican caucus would cooperate with … [Read more...]
Democrats and Privacy
Clay is on top of a breaking story from the State Capitol. Seems Democrat Rep. Jerry Frangas has been parading around a box full of state employees' confidential personal information as a way to entice media coverage for a bill he is proposing. Republican House Minority Leader Joe Stengel has addressed the serious concerns about the custody and availability of these documents in a letter to House Speaker Andrew Romanoff (Clay has posted the full text). Stengel has asked for an investigation. Will Romanoff open an investigation? How serious are Democrats about personal privacy and, more importantly, about preventing possible identity theft? … [Read more...]
Are Democrats Getting It?
As the year 2004 winds down, it's fair to continue asking the question: what did the opposition party learn from its national electoral defeat? Those hopeful that the Democrats are willing to listen, stand up, and take "Red State" America seriously have at least three "wise men" on their side to cheer their hopes, the Washington Times editorializes today. Most notable is former Congressman Tim Roemer of Indiana, a possible candidate for the Democratic National Committee chairmanship. According to the Times, Roemer "had a strong pro-life voting record in the House" and has garnered support both from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid AND House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Interesting. How this sort of thing would go over with the … [Read more...]
Why the Skills Gap is a Knowledge Gap
Nearly a decade ago, in October 2009, when the recession and unemployment was at its absolute worst, unemployment peaked at 10 percent. All the while the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that there were 2.1 million available jobs. What happened after that was unsurprising, but unfortunate all the same. Both sides of the political aisle saw a chance to make a political statement. The Republicans called out the unemployed for being lazy, while the Democrats claimed that the greed of corporate America was to blame — if they would only pay what they should. The focus was not the fact that those jobs existed; instead, the focus was on the debate. Why the Shift to College Education? High school graduates have attended college at far … [Read more...]
