Hail to the Lion… and JoePa

If you love a good college football game, I believe you saw one of the best last night... though for awhile it seemed like it would never end. Penn State's 26-23 triple overtime victory over the courageous Florida State Seminoles (after a combined 5 missed kicks) was one for the ages - literally. The Nittany Lions' 79-year-old coaching legend Joe Paterno - after a couple of truly abominable campaigns - won redemption with a Big Ten title, an 11-1 record, and the Orange Bowl crown, by defeating 76-year-old Bobby Bowden's squad. The two men have combined for 713 coaching victories (more than some Division I-A programs have earned in their entire history), but determining who would win No. 713 was in great suspense throughout as the Lions … [Read more...]

Gas Pump Observations

Perhaps I'm giving away my youth and inexperience, but I don't remember the long gas lines that accompanied the oil shortages of the late 1970s. Not to say that now is in any way comparable to those days, but I witnessed a renewed clarity of consumer consciousness at the gas station on my way home tonight. Knowing the Buick's tank was lagging in the fuel department, I've been putting off the necessity for the past few days, burying my head as the cost of gasoline skyrockets. Nevertheless, the car was nearing empty, so I planned a stop this evening at a Wheat Ridge gas station noted for its relatively low prices. Of course, if the numbers posted on their sign tonight had been there even two weeks ago, the scene would have been much … [Read more...]

An Enterpriser

The Pew Research Center has released its new assessment of "political typology," the first such report since 1999. Reading the report is an exercise for diehard political junkies, but anyone out there with some curiosity and a few minutes to spare should take the quiz to see where you fit into the scheme of things. A gracious hat tip to Michelle Malkin, a fellow Enterpriser: WHO THEY ARE: Predominantly white (91%), male (76%) and financially well-off (62% have household incomes of at least $50,000, compared with 40% nationwide). Nearly half (46%) have a college degree, and 77% are married. Nearly a quarter (23%) are themselves military veterans. Only 10% are under age 30. LIFESTYLE NOTES: 59% have a gun in the home; 53% trade … [Read more...]

Read About Our Meeting with the Governor

Yesterday afternoon, upon the kind invitation of Sean Duffy, four members of the Rocky Mountain Alliance - American Kestrel, View from a Height, Clay Calhoun, and myself - spent more than an hour with Governor Bill Owens in his office discussing key issues facing the state. Needless to say, I want to give that meeting a fair and thorough write-up. Look for that to come over the weekend or early next week. Thanks again to Governor Owens, Sean, and Mark Salley. I truly appreciated the time and the opportunity. … [Read more...]

Opening Day Roar

It's days like this I miss being a sports editor. Without the broadsheet pages on which to print my thoughts, I hope you will kindly forbear as I indulge in a bit of nostalgia. We Detroit Tigers' fans have been in the doghouse for more than a decade. It's been a long, dry, painful spell for those loyal to the Olde English D - especially long to someone like me who was a junior in high school the last time the Tigs finished a season with more wins than losses, a prepubescent 5th grader the last time they went to the playoffs, and a mere 7 years old during that magical 1984 World Series run that seems like ancient history now. In 2002, hope that a true turnaround was coming started to take shape as Detroit hired Dave Dombrowski as … [Read more...]

Detroit Baseball: A New Hope

As Major League Baseball's 76th All-Star Game makes its appearance at Detroit's Comerica Park tomorrow evening, the spotlight turns on a city still haunted by the echoes of urban decay. Motown's battle for a fairer perception opens a new chapter. For many old enough to remember it, the words "Detroit" and "baseball" together conjure up a glorious 1984 World Series victory overshadowed by deplorable behavior - vandalism, fires, destruction. How far has Detroit come since then? Progress has been made, for sure, but not a lot. Michigan's largest city, the once-thriving world capital of automotive production, has a lot to prove. The Tigers, the wearers of the proud Olde English D, have a lot to prove as well. No World Series since 1984. No … [Read more...]

Blog Holiday

Nothing profound or thought-provoking or informative to say, no blog or news story I've found to which I want to link. Cold and rainy outside. Seems like the perfect occasion for a blog holiday. No posts 'till Wednesday - unless, of course, something profound or thought-provoking or informative changes my mind. … [Read more...]

“Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche” (but do they blog?)

It's a Friday, and I couldn't resist highlighting this Washington Tims story from yesterday on a new Harris survey that gives some not-so-shocking insights into what women want in their men. Some of the findings (with my comments in italics): • 75 percent of women said their ideal man buys his grooming products at a grocery store or drugstore, not a salon. A salon... what's that? • 72 percent of women said their ideal man spends his free time doing home-improvement projects. My wife prefers that I try to fix things when possible but realistically just hopes that I don't break anything in the process. • 41 percent of women said their ideal man spends his time watching sports. Yes, but only once in awhile... • 47 percent of women … [Read more...]
