Salazar’s “Abomination”

Our junior United States Senator from Colorado, Ken Salazar - have the Left-liberal pressure groups inside the Beltway caused him to forget who he represents, or does he really feel this way? A key Salazar quote from today's Rocky Mountain News: "There are members of the U.S. Supreme Court that I very much disagree with. Clarence Thomas, for example, I think is an abomination when you contrast him to the leadership and principles of someone like Thurgood Marshall. I've been in front of the court and I know the justices." Think for a minute: When was the last time you heard a sitting Republican elected official call Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Stephen Breyer or John Paul Stevens an "abomination"? With rhetoric like that, they would be … [Read more...]

Memo to GOP Leaders in Colorado

Bobby Eberle's blog is a worthwhile read today. Message? Grow a spine on immigration and spending. Maybe a new Gallup poll speaks more clearly to the known language of political leaders. Maybe this time they will take heed. Or maybe they'll learn the hard way... again. I also hear there's a new book out on a similar topic ... or is it about home decorating? a geography textbook? a primer on military conquest? Anyway, check it out. … [Read more...]

Holtzman Returning Fire

The cannon fire is gaining strength within Colorado's Republican camp, as the Marc Holtzman team shoots back and asks where rival Bob Beauprez has been on the Referenda C and D campaign. Lest the Holtzman attack gets carried away too far, there is no doubt that Beauprez opposes the twin tax increase measures, though he may feel conflicted about making too public an opposition to his friend Bill Owens. Both sides have elements of truth on their side. Holtzman has been in the limelight and absorbed the public backlash far more than his opponent. Gradually, he is establishing himself as the political leader on the issue, building inroads into the GOP's fiscally conservative base and trying to establish his credibility for next year's big … [Read more...]

Meeting with Marc Holtzman

Mike has already given a thoughtful description of our meeting yesterday with Republican gubernatorial hopeful Marc Holtzman. (I'm sure Joshua has one forthcoming as well.) Holtzman and his campaign adviser Laura Teal graciously gave us more than an hour of their time and of the candidate's vision, passion, and optimism. The former president of the University of Denver & state technology secretary talked with facility and command about how to solve the budget's structural problems in creative and courageous ways. He shared his plan for strengthening the state's Republican Party structure. He has concrete ideas to address the current and looming issues of illegal immigration, eminent domain abuse, energy dependence, and public health … [Read more...]

The Heights of Blogging

The RMA's own Joshua Sharf has developed into a reliable source for the local mainstream media on issues related to blogging. Kudos to the Denver Post for acknowledging the credibility and value of this burgeoning alternative media - specifically, Jim Hughes' article today on PirateBallerina's persistent pressure on Ward Churchill and the University of Colorado. Most significant in the story is the contrast between an academic's warped, myopic view (notably from a professor of journalism) and a blogger's insightful comments from a clear and lofty perspective. First: Johansen, who teaches journalism, said in an e-mail that Paine's gotchas are baseless and that he walked away from the committee because of what he saw as a nasty media … [Read more...]

Saving money for a rainy day

Kudos to two of the state GOP's rising stars for proposing the most responsible legislation I've seen yet regarding how to handle the influx of Referendum C dollars. Reps. Josh Penry [memo to Lynn Bartels & editors - Penry, not Henry] and Cory Gardner are leading the way with a couple of different plans to create a rainy-day fund to save state money rather than spend it frivolously on new programs. I'm glad to see these two Republican lawmakers out in front on this issue, and hopefully the Democrat-majority legislature can avoid the temptations to empty the pocketbooks and instead follow a sound plan for the future, much like your average Colorado family has to do. Keep an eye on these pieces of legislation: I have a feeling they will be … [Read more...]

Dems Have a Plan!

Who says the Democrats can't be the party of national security? The Dems' congressional leadership is pitching a new plan to the American people. Finally being able to have a reasoned debate should be healthy for the republic. … [Read more...]

Rita Evacuees Await Return

From a Christian camp director in Louisiana - affiliated with the work of Operation Renewed Hope - who is housing evacuees from the areas most directly hit by Rita's fury this morning: I thought I would give you all an update while we still have power. We currently have around 250 evacuees housed at the camp. Our staff is doing a great job taking care of them and feeding them. The people have been very patient and understanding in the midst of a difficult situation. We are still a couple of hours away from the strongest part of Rita hitting us but we are not expecting too much damage. Most of the folks with us are from the hardest hit areas in South Louisiana and Texas. Many of them will be going home to nothing. We are already … [Read more...]

Governor’s Race Chatter and the RMA

Who knew our meeting with Marc Holtzman would create such a stir among political insiders? First, the honest observations of Mike, Joshua, and myself get quoted in the latest release from the Holtzman campaign. Then the Dead Governors feature us as the leading topic of weekend chatter. (I haven't always seen eye to eye with the anonymous, center-left proprietors of ColoradoPols, but I am grateful to them for providing a link to my site.) As for my comments? They're all real, folks. Take them for what they're worth. No detriment to Congressman Beauprez, just my genuinely positive impressions of his opponent's campaign. The three of us who met with Holtzman don't speak for the entire Rocky Mountain Alliance, but we represent a … [Read more...]

You Can’t Make Up This Stuff

"Men Warm Globe, Women Feel the Heat, Group Claims": The debate over climate change evolved into a battle of the sexes Monday at the 11th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference in Montreal. The spokesman for a feminist-based environmental group accused men of being the biggest contributors to human-caused "global warming" and lamented that women are bearing the brunt of the negative climate consequences created by men. "Women and men are differently affected by climate change and they contribute differently to climate change," said Ulrike Rohr, director of the German-based group called "Genanet-Focal point gender, Environment, Sustainability." I think we married men need to complain less about those things we do get … [Read more...]
