This morning I sent the following letter to my Congressman, U.S. Representative Bob Beauprez of Colorado's 7th Congressional District, regarding the important upcoming decisions for new leadership in the House: As an active Jefferson County Republican and supporter of your candidacy in the past two elections, I have a concern shared by many within the party that I would like to share. Regarding the upcoming elections of GOP House leadership, I believe it is of the utmost importance for the sake of the party and the country to select leaders a) who are completely untainted by any dealings with Jack Abramoff, b) who are proven and committed fiscal conservatives (opponents of pork & earmarks), and c) who understand that lobbying and … [Read more...]
The Best Take on the Bennish Fiasco
What lesson ought we to take from the whole Jay Bennish fiasco? David Harsanyi hits a home run with his column today: "Teacher Fuss Shows Need for Choice." Go and read it. … [Read more...]
Why is Fitz-Gerald Staying Out?
State Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald has joined a growing list of prominent Colorado Democrats by announcing yesterday that she won't pursue a run for the governor's office. The eyes of all political insiders now turn to Speaker Andrew Romanoff. Both Fitz-Gerald and Romanoff earlier announced their potential candidacies for the state's top executive offices hinged on the passage of Referenda C and D. Now Fitz-Gerald has bailed out a week before the election. And the generally left-of-center audience of the Dead Governors' blog is already rationalizing. Let's see... the outcry for weeks has been that the Colorado Democrats need a primary opponent for Bill Ritter, especially because of his pro-life views. When asked by the Denver … [Read more...]
Food for Grateful Thought
President Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation (October 20, 1864): It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with his guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad, and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our own household. It has also pleased our Heavenly Father to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their campus, and our sailors on the rivers and seas, with unusual health. He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while he has opened to us new sources of wealth, and has crowned the labor of our workingmen in every department of industry with abundant rewards. Moreover, he … [Read more...]
Beauprez On Board with Blunt
Yesterday I wrote an open letter urging Rep. Bob Beauprez to support Rep. John Shadegg in the upcoming House leadership elections. An astute commenter pointed out that I was "too late" - linking to a site I had not seen that says Beauprez has already committed to supporting current House Majority Whip Roy Blunt. Assuming the complete accuracy of this list, it is important to note the following: As he burns up cell phone minutes this weekend, Shadegg is likely to secure endorsements from previously uncommitted members of the group. And today his spokesperson went even further, issuing a statement asserting that they "already have defections from the Blunt list." Lastly, as Richard Cohen sagely noted in this week's issue of National … [Read more...]
Schaffer Returns to Ukraine
Former Congressman Bob Schaffer departs Colorado today for the Ukraine as an official observer of the young democratic nation's parliamentary elections. The Denver Post has set up a blog to record Schaffer's observations, which will also be followed by students at several Colorado schools. As you may recall, Schaffer - who himself is of Ukrainian heritage - was on hand for "The Orange Revolution" of 2004, in which he sent dispatches via Blackberry covering the remarkable breaking events in Kiev. As one who has watched history unfold in Eastern Europe, Schaffer again gets to connect his experiences directly with readers in Colorado ... and across the globe. Ain't technology wonderful? … [Read more...]
My First (and hopefully only) Harriet Miers Post
I have kept silence on Harriet Miers, largely agnostic but increasingly skeptical as the weeks wore on. I was startled that the withdrawal of her nomination came so suddenly, and I can't say I'm as disappointed as Mr. Hewitt is. One of his linchpin arguments in support of Miers has been that most of the party's base in Red State America supported her - primarily the Beltway elites were leading the anti-Miers charge. Today he writes: There is a deeply disturbed and disappointed group of GOP voters dismayed by the treatment of Miers. I don't know how big it is --it isn't small-- and I don't know which would have been the less bitter result, but there is no denying the political damage done to the GOP, and in the hands of competent … [Read more...]
Hurrah for CHRISTMAS
During this past week, I renewed my determination to make a conscious effort this yuletide season to keep Christ & Christmas as prominent as possible. I don't want to get caught in the trap of the bland, insipid, politically correct "Happy Holidays" & "Seasons Greetings". Won't you of like faith join me in the simple task of wishing store clerks, wait staff, and other strangers you meet a clear, kind, and bold "Merry Christmas"? Along these lines, I spotted a couple stories this morning that I wanted to share. Apparently, government agencies are starting to get it better than many of the corporate retailers who profit so handsomely this time of year? Three cheers to the Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - for whom there has been little … [Read more...]
Ray Nagin, meet Pat Robertson
People who confidently presume to know the mind of God in major world events have always unsettled me. Often I think they must not be reading the same inspired Scriptures that I do. About 10 days ago I took Rev. Pat Robertson to task for his remarks about Ariel Sharon: both presumptuous and inappropriate. Yesterday, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin got in on the act, with his claims that the hurricane that struck his city and the Gulf Coast region was some kind of retribution for the Iraq war. At least Robertson's claim had some loose connection to actual Old Testament prophecy. Nagin went even farther out on a limb, appropriating Divine purposes to suit his views on American foreign policy. Yet I can guarantee the outcry and response from … [Read more...]
Caucus Night
I can't do better on Caucus Night observations than Joshua - maybe NOT wearing a yarmulker helped me to blend in a bit. As far as not feeling like a fish out of water, I was pleased to see a few members of the 30-&-under crowd with me at the Arvada gathering of 5 precincts. The caucus was a disappointingly small affair ... enthusiasm at the GOP grassroots level is not exactly spilling over the brim. Hmm, go figure. There were 3 of us who showed up for my precinct (and a fourth by proxy). A couple of the other precincts had 6 to 8 people, and one other lady showed up to find out she was her precinct. I was elected by acclamation, along with the other three in my precinct, as a delegate to the Jefferson County Assembly. Unfortunately, … [Read more...]
