On a Colorado day when the insider political buzz revolves around Governor Owen's impending call of a special session to address illegal immigration and a last-minute brokered deal between Democrats once on the opposite side of the question, there is another story to keep your eye on. The appeal of a well-documented but inexplicably dismissed complaint against the teachers union is scheduled to be heard in the Colorado Court of Appeals this afternoon. GOP Governor Hopefuls Chase “65 Percent Solution”
Both Marc Holtzman [no link yet available on his Web site] and Bob Beauprez are touting their support of the popular "65 percent solution" education initiative. A ceremony was held at the State Capitol today to celebrate the submission of the petition signatures that officially put the measure on Colorado's November ballot. In our separate RMA interviews with the two candidates several months ago, I came away with the convincing impression that Holtzman had a much stronger grasp of the issue than his rival did. I am more confident he could hold up the arguments in a debate with a formidable opponent who may be in the pockets of the education interest groups. I feel entitled to be politically pessimistic today. While Joshua opines on President Bush as LBJ, Clay traffics in crass, baseless, ad hominem attacks ... against a fellow Republican. And these are my Rocky Mountain Alliance friends! I appreciate Joshua's attempt at discourse. The concerns he addresses demonstrate historical perspective and insight. And they raise at least one issue about Bush's low poll numbers I have not often heard discussed: that they represent disaffection among some conservatives more than a general Left-ward tilt of the voting populace. A ‘No-mentum’ Race for Governor
Courtesy of Real Clear Politics, the latest Rasmussen numbers in Colorado's race for governor show that none of the 3 candidates has gained any traction in the past month. The narrow teeter-totter between Republican Bob Beauprez and Democrat Bill Ritter has tipped slightly in Beauprez's favor (essentially because Ritter's numbers dropped), but still within the margin of error. Ritter's lead over Holtzman remains steady at 5 points. The Teachers Union and Child Sex Trafficking
Say what? That's the typical response to a story highlighted at GOPUSA today: The Washington Education Association recently denied a Christian teacher's request to have her dues diverted to a charity that opposes sex trafficking. The teacher objected to funding the WEA's support for abortion and same-sex "marriage" with her dues. The controversial group that the union didn't want the teacher's money diverted to? I know the story isn't brand new, but I couldn't resist a quick post on this topic before the weekend: the Rocky Mountain News castigates State Senator Deanna Hanna - the most popular Colorado legislator in the "name game" song - today with an implied rhetorical comparison to the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Does the word "shakedown" mean anything? The Democrat from Lakewood is in ethical hot water for basically attempting to extort money from a realtors' group that she felt betrayed her by refusing to fund her 2004 re-election campaign and giving $1,400 to her Republican opponent instead. See You at the Caucus
Colorado is one of the very best states for citizens to be active in the political process. If you live & are registered to vote in Colorado but haven't participated in the caucus/assembly process before, there's no time like 2006 to get started. The neighborhood caucuses are coming up next Tuesday, March 21 (most are at 7 PM). It's a great chance to meet up with some of the neighbors, to learn more about the different candidates, to persuade and be persuaded about what issues are important, to choose who will represent you at the County Assembly (and often the State Assembly, too), and to vote on resolutions that will get discussed and refined at the county level, maybe even make it onto the state party platform. While living among the mundane trappings of relative peace and calm, days of punctuated horror and profound tragedy often seem dreamlike. Such is 9/11, and such is why every American should strongly consider seeing the movie United 93. Typically, when I watch a new film at the theater or on DVD, I can find some other movie with which to compare it. Be it the acting, the story line, the scenery, distinct or oblique references. United 93, however, is anything but a typical film. For a culture sometimes too fixated on everything from sporting events to celebrity relationships - and various other diversions from reality - United 93 is like a bucket of badly needed cold water.
