The Rocky Mountain News reports that Jay Bennish lawyer David Lane plans to file a lawsuit in federal court this morning to put the highly controversial teacher back in the classroom. Bennish is currently on paid administrative leave while the Cherry Creek School District conducts an investigation based on his 20-minute recorded left-wing political tirade. From the News story: "I know about 10 federal judges who are more than willing to teach the Cherry Creek School District what the First Amendment is all about," his attorney, David Lane, said Thursday. Lane said he expects to file a federal lawsuit as early as this morning, and that seeking a court order to return Bennish to the classroom is one option he might pursue. He … [Read more...]
Immigration Reform Rally Thursday
Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman will be a featured speaker at an immigration reform rally, sponsored by Defend Colorado Now, on the west steps of the State Capitol. Date: Thursday, April 27 Time: 11 AM Check it out! The only remaining question to see is whether the Denver Public Schools will dismiss kids for the rally and send buses to pick them up afterward, like they did at last week's anti-reform parade. … [Read more...]
Go Figure
The Dead Governors are right to question the credibility of anonymous bloggers claiming to be College Republicans who have jumped ship to support Ritter. There isn't time to deconstruct the alleged confession line-by-line. Either this is a very clever liberal ploy or a CR member who is very gullible and wishy-washy. Regardless, anonymity on the 'Net undermines credibility. Until there is clarity and context and elaboration, such an announcement should be taken with the molecule of salt it deserves. And even then... … [Read more...]
From the “Death of Common Sense” Case Files
Fox News reports: BROCKTON, Mass. — A 6-year-old boy is getting a lesson on the meaning of sexual harassment long before he'll be able to spell it. The first-grader was suspended for three days for sexual harassment after he put two fingers inside a classmate's waistband, school officials told his mother, Berthena Dorinvil. The boy told her he only touched the girl's shirt after the girl touched him. Experts say only in rare, troubling cases can children that young truly sexually harass one another. "The connotation is you're getting some kind of sexual gratification, or wanting sexual gratification, or are putting pressure on for some kind of sexual gratification, when a 6-year-old doesn't have that capacity," said E. … [Read more...]
Fact-Challenged Jay Bennish
To all the readers finding my site via Google or another search, I thought it useful to the debate to link to an industrious blogger putting together a factual response to many of Colorado geography teacher Jay Bennish's claims in his 20-minute tirade. (HT: Hugh Hewitt) This advances the debate even farther than I summarized it last night. … [Read more...]
The Scoop on Colorado’s 65 Percent Plan
Check out my latest for School Reform News on an upcoming Colorado ballot proposal to define how much public education money is spent "in the classroom." (Also known as the "65 percent plan") If nothing else, it may be an interesting read based on the number of colorful quotes I was able to cite for the story, like this one from Ken DeLay, executive director of the Colorado Association of School Boards: "We don't have administrators so they can sit in hot tubs and feather their nests." Or this little "exchange" between Deborah Fallin, the spokesperson for the Colorado Education Association, and Tim Mooney, the executive director of First Class Education: "It's about educating people about the measure," said Fallin. "We are … [Read more...]
Irony, Confusion, and Desperate Hopes
Have you stopped and thought about this irony? The survival of the Republican primary campaign of gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman - steeped in the claim that he is the only credible candidate in strong opposition to illegal immigration - now appears to hinge on the same hopes that have removed the anti-illegal immigration initiative from the ballot: attorney Marc Grueskin and a new interpretation of the law from the activist Colorado Supreme Court. Read that again. Let it sink in. You'd have to think it was a comic parody, but it's sadly all too real. This was the only bright spot for the underdog: While that decision was a blow to Holtzman, Hyatt also rejected a challenge to the qualifications of many of the paid … [Read more...]
Lincoln’s Day, Lincoln’s Year
Editor's note: I have included my most highly recommended Lincoln book selections at the end of this post, if you care to read that far. Since the celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday was subsumed under the generic President's Day label, the significance of tomorrow often is forgotten. But I would have a difficult time omitting a commemorative mention of the significance of February 12 - especially this year. In both the Gregorian and Western Christian church calendars, 2006 runs the same pattern as 1865, the closing months of Lincoln's life - since recounted in legendary memory. The assassination of the 16th President took place on the night of Good Friday, April 14, the same date in which American Christians and others will … [Read more...]
Bennish Update
Fox News reports a positive development in the controversial Colorado geography teacher case: Jay Bennish has decided to drop the lawsuit against Cherry Creek School District in exchange for the district dropping the media gag order. In my opinion, both sides chose wisely. We may start to hear from the embattled Marxist instructor in various outlets. Stay tuned. … [Read more...]
If April Is Any Indication
If April is any indication, 2006 figures to be a happier baseball season at Mount Virtus than in the dismal climes of the Northern Alliance or the deluded braggadocio of Hugh Hewitt. Here are the American League Central standings as the regular season's first month has come to a close: Chi White Sox 17-7 (-) Detroit 16-9 (1.5 GB) Cleveland 13-12 (4.5 GB) Minnesota 9-15 (8.0 GB) Kansas City 5-17 (11.0 GB) Prognosticators and pundits may start to get a little uneasy, though a lot of baseball remains to be played. My Detroit Tigers, however, have given every evidence of finally turning it around this season with new manager Jim Leyland at the helm. After their best April since the historic 1984 championship season, the team … [Read more...]
