Know Your Parodies

Only a handful of political insiders have even noticed - especially three Colorado blogs (leave a comment or send an email if you want to know which ones) bent on bringing down all GOP presidential candidates except the obscure also-ran Jim Gilmore - but there are some weird things being said at a site styled as an official Sam Brownback for President campaign blog. And news being slow as it is around a holiday, the Denver Post's Karen Crummy had a full-length story published on it today. For those who have gotten a lot of mileage out of disparaging Senator Brownback based on the outlandish absurdity posted on the site in question - in other words, for those who have chosen to disbelieve the obvious - this may come as a startling … [Read more...]

More Horn Tooting

El Presidente is tooting his own horn, having climbed to the top of the most recent rankings of influential Colorado political blogs. The other horn noise you hear comes from a tailgating Mount Virtus, close on his bumper at #2. El Presidente won't be able to ease off the accelerator too much with such friendly competition. More interestingly, seven of the top 10 on the influence meter are right-leaning blog sites. I'm not sure if this fact says more about the nature or the quality of the political debate or more about the secret methodology used to create the rankings. Regardless, you as a reader are part of the success. Thanks for your continuing visits. … [Read more...]

George Will (and me) on SCOTUS Worker Free Speech Case

In his latest Townhall column, George Will tackles the problem many union leaders have employing force rather than seeking favor: Democracy is rule by persuasion, but the unpersuasive often try to coerce the unpersuaded. Recent days have provided two illustrations of this tendency, both of them pertaining to labor unions, whose decades of declining membership testify to their waning power to persuade workers that unions add more value to workers' lives than they subtract. Will devotes much of his column to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Davenport case. I won't retread that issue now (previous Mount Virtus coverage featured here), except to say you can tune in at 10 o'clock this morning local Denver time to the Mike Rosen … [Read more...]

On TV with the AG

As explained here, I will be guest alongside Colorado Attorney General John Suthers on tomorrow evening's edition of Independent Thinking: I2I Education Policy Analyst Ben DeGrow and AG Suthers will join I2I president Jon Caldara to Discuss Supreme Court Victory on Friday's episode of Independent Thinking. The show will disect the legal victory for the free speech rights of workers. The episode airs on KBDI Channel 12 in Denver (Channel 32 in Colorado Springs) TOMORROW (Friday) at 8:30 PM, and on Sunday, July 8, at 11:30 AM. Hillman Debunks Sacred Text of Colorado Left

About a month ago, I highlighted the release of a liberal interest group's report that used selective and distorted statistics to argue that Colorado needs a huge tax increase. Predictably, local Lefty bloggers leaped to embrace the work with little appearance of critical hesitation. Then I wrote: My friends, the Left in Colorado is growing desperate and increasingly irrational. They blindly accept a report written by their ideological allies that shares their premises. Come to this site for a critical analysis of the report. And hopefully others will offer their critical analyses, as well. Then we may see a little bit more independent thinking taking place. Well, I've been slow to add my critical analysis. It is summertime, after all. … [Read more...]

Garage Sale Days

Update: The grill is SOLD! But you're still welcome to stop by tomorrow (Saturday) during the day. It's garage sale time today and tomorrow at Mount Virtus. Not a ton of stuff to offer, but plenty of the usual books, clothes, and odds & ends. BUT ... if you or someone you know in the Denver area would like to be the owner of a mildly-used, Brinkman charcoal grill/smoker (needs replacement grates) for a VERY reasonable price, drop me a comment or an email. If one of our non-virtual customers hasn't swept it up first, we'll be ready to make a deal! That's all the blogging here for now. … [Read more...]

Sicko Deception

The truth-challenged windbag Michael Moore - a blight on the honor of my home state - has been called to the carpet again by those stubborn, annoying facts. Canadian expatriate Sally Pipes writes in "More lies from Moore" to expose the left-wing filmmaker's problem in using a clip of her in his new movie "Sicko" to supposedly demonstrate American ignorance of the Canadian healthcare system. Unfortunately for Moore, Pipes actually knows the problems of the system firsthand: I am a new American, but I grew up and worked for many years in Canada. And I know the health care system of my native country much more intimately than does Moore. There's a good reason why my former countrymen with the money to do so either use the services of a … [Read more...]

Harsanyi Highlights Ritter’s High-Stakes Mismanagement

Just in case you missed it, you may wish to check out the latest example of high-stakes mismanagement from Colorado's Democratic Governor Bill Ritter: What are we to make of Gov. Bill Ritter's swift firing of Chris Olson, his original choice to head the Division of Emergency Management? The administration refuses to answer virtually any queries on the matter - which tells us plenty. Only a few short weeks ago, Ritter sent out a news release fawning over Olson's "commitment to emergency management, his longtime experience in public safety and service to the community ..." Yet, when The Post sounded the alarm regarding Olson's troubling history - including a domestic-violence call summoning police to his home, a civil-rights violation … [Read more...]

GOP Presidential Candidate to Address Liberal NEA Delegates

Although I can't find it on their website, the National Education Association has confirmed eight presidential candidates to come speak at its annual meeting starting next Friday in Philadelphia, at least according to an email sent by the Colorado Education Association affiliate to its members. The eight candidates are listed alphabetically, as follows: 1. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) 2. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) 3. Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) 4. Former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) 5. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) 6. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) 7. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) 8. Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) There are seven complete non-surprises there. But, if you're at all like me, you are wondering what Gov. Huckabee … [Read more...]

“Baseball dominates in Detroit,” Mt. Virtus Relishes TigerMania

A fitting night for the Detroit Tigers to beat the Bo Sox in dramatic fashion - 3-2 in 13 innings. On 7/7/07, the game-winning hit came courtesy of #7, Pudge Rodriguez, off Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon. Comerica Park sold 44,193 tickets to the game - standing room only and a near record for the 7-year-old stadium. Sellouts have become the norm in the Motor City, where just four seasons ago the Tigers flirted with record futility. Now reigning American League champs, the team closes in on the All Star break in a first-place tie with Cleveland, despite having a decimated bullpen. Detroit's manager captured the city's love affair with the game, echoing statements I used to make regularly back when the team wandered in the wilderness … [Read more...]
