Lefty Attacks on Schaffer “More Rovian Than Karl Rove Himself”

Face the State highlights the fraud and deceit behind Michael Huttner's attacks against Republican State Board of Education vice chair Bob Schaffer. Key passages: Earlier this year, Schaffer was in the majority of the board when he voted to remand back to the Denver School Board a decision to deny Life Skills Center its charter. While Denver previously denied the mostly-minority school’s charter, it ultimately agreed with the state board and approved the school’s proposal to continue in existence. After the vote, Schaffer received a campaign contribution to aid his current U.S. Senate bid from David Brennan, an individual who runs a charter school management company that has contracts with Life Skills. Huttner is trying to say that … [Read more...]

Lefty Lemmings Need to Read Before They Launch Attacks

Demonstrating quite a bit of ironic ignorance, the diarist "Go Blue" and commenters at the Dead Governors site latch onto an unsubstantiated attack against former state senator and state treasurer Mark Hillman, using hollow ammunition provided by the Lefties at the Bell Policy Center. As explained yesterday, Hillman co-wrote a report for the Independence Institute on the difference between the promises made in the Referendum C campaign and the promises delivered in state spending. The Bell then released a quick press release ignoring the substance of the report and decrying the analysis as "simplistic," as well as a preliminary research summary that projects FUTURE revenue and spending. Yet pushing along the herd of lemmings, the … [Read more...]

Lesson in Journalistic Ethics for CSU Student Paper

The story of the juvenile, obscene editorial in the Colorado State University newspaper has prompted the Independence Institute's Jessica Corry and Ryan Olivett (a current CSU student) to fire back with a sharp reminder in journalistic ethics: Like a child howling in a candy store to get what he wants, the Collegian substituted a four letter word for genuine political discourse. All for attention. If only McSwane had stepped back for a moment to acknowledge not just his freedoms as an American—but also his ethical obligations as a newspaper editor. According to the code of ethics espoused by the Society of Professional Journalists, "gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort," but this doesn't mean the "pursuit … [Read more...]

Irrational Faith of Colorado Nutroots Continues to Amuse

It's funny to watch the Colorado Nutroots (I don't need to link to them - you can find them by going to Blog Net News) erupt into spontaneous glee with glib "I-told-you-so's" to anyone who doesn't believe in the perfecting power of the ever-expanding sphere of government, at the release of this report (large PDF). Of course, I haven't even seen any of them actually link to the report, just to articles that mention the report and its apparently bleak picture of Colorado. (Hint: The report says our state doesn't spend as much as other states in some areas. Egads! It must be the death knell of civilization here in the Centennial State.) Critical analysis? Don't expect any from the secular statist fundamentalist crowd. They've found their … [Read more...]

Suicide Killers: A Stunning Documentary

Pierre Rehov's new documentary "Suicide Killers" may be too politically incorrect to receive an Academy Award nomination, but that fact should recommend the film to more American viewers. And certainly, there were more viewers at last night's screening at the Colorado History Museum than event organizers anticipated. The modest size of the screen in the large hall forced the rows to be tightly-packed, but most guests eagerly pressed in to get a closer look. Reading the frequent subtitles - absolutely essential to absorbing the film's startling content - presented a minor challenge of tilting heads and craning necks. I was drawn in to the disturbing images, largely appropriate in their context and level of graphic detail, as well as … [Read more...]

Your Chance to Write One of our Troops Overseas

If you haven't contributed yet to Jim's Project "Letters from Home," let me encourage you again to participate. It's easy to do, and a great opportunity to encourage our troops. Here's Jim's email update on the project: I just wanted to take a minute and let everyone know how the project is going. Response has really fallen off the last week or so. After getting almost 400 emails over the first two weeks, I’ve only gotten 6 or 7 this week.... I can’t begin to tell you how important the success of this project is to me. I don’t want these men and women to have any doubt that we support them! Thank you so much for everything you’ve done so far to help. I truly couldn’t have gotten this far without your help. Once again, the … [Read more...]

What is Ritter Hiding?

As the Rocky's editors bring home today ... In crafting a policy that will have an impact on state employees and the entire state budget, Gov. Bill Ritter is withholding documents the public deserve to see. The question remains: What is Ritter trying to hide? … [Read more...]

State GOP Needs to Temper Confidence with Patience

Today's Denver Post headline "State GOP plots revival, but in 2010" is not surprising for those in the know. For a variety of reasons, new Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams (who instills fear into the Left side of the state's blogosphere) inherited a very difficult situation. He doesn't have an easy task before him. The headline is a little bit misleading, as Wadhams says there are real hopes for limited gains in 2008. Perhaps the better headline would have been "State GOP plots return to power by 2010." But that's a small detail. Confidently forecasting victory for U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer and that Colorado will cast its vote for the Republican presidential candidate, Wadhams is playing the role of partisan … [Read more...]

Remembering Elvis

On this the 30th anniversary of the passing of the legendary Elvis Presley, we pause to reflect on a tremendously successful musical talent remembered today through a long series of sub-par films, dime-a-dozen Las Vegas impersonators, and velvet paintings hung from the walls of mobile homes. As for me, I cried the day Elvis died but haven't given him much thought since. Well, at least I'm not a hound dog. … [Read more...]

Linking with the Western Slope

Proof that we conservative political bloggers along Colorado's Front Range are too easily disconnected from what goes on in our state's Western Slope, it took nearly 8 months for me to run across the witty, reliably conservative commentary of Gene Kinsey at Living the Grand Life. As I learned today, Kinsey is the former mayor of Grand Junction. In addition to his writings on national and state politics (someone else upset by Gov. Ritter's antics!), I'm most keenly interested in Kinsey's regular postings on local political happenings in and around Grand Junction: needed for a more balanced Colorado blogging diet. Check out his site and add it to your blogroll. … [Read more...]
