New Football Coach Allows Maize & Blue Faithful to Rest Easy

A lot of space has been taken up in the Michigan (land of my upbringing) media detailing the University of Michigan's search for a head football coach after Lloyd Carr retired. Today we learn that all the rumors come to an end as West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez has agreed to take the helm in Ann Arbor. One might be forgiven if he came to the conclusion that the Mountaineers' program was the Wolverines' coaching farm system. After all, Michigan hired John Beilein directly from West Virginia this past April to coach their men's basketball program. Now the football team. A direct line from Morgantown to Ann Arbor? Perhaps. Regardless, let me assure you that fans of the illustrious University of Michigan football program - which has … [Read more...]

My Debut as Radio Show Host

For my devoted fans, I make my radio host debut tomorrow morning: that's Wednesday, January 9, from 9 AM to 11 AM, as I guest host the Amy Oliver show on News Talk 1310 KFKA in northern Colorado. You can listen online here. Topics will include education reform at Bruce Randolph School, government employee unions, and the New Hampshire presidential primary. There will no doubt be plenty to talk about, so hope you can listen in. Of course, some of you are thinking: Yikes, they're giving the mike to him? Has the world gone mad? Perhaps, but it should be a lot of fun. And a good way to flog the blog while I'm at it. … [Read more...]

Date Set for Tax Hike Suit Showdown

Face the State has the latest on the court case requesting a vote of the people on Gov. Bill Ritter's statewide property tax increase:The State Board of Education, claiming that CDE is the wrong agency to be targeted, has asked the court to be removed as a defendant. Meanwhile, Ritter has sought to intervene as defendant. A Denver District Court hearing has been set for May 5. State Board of Education member Bob Schaffer, R-Fort Collins, believes Ritter has a lot at stake in the courts’ pending decision, having approved a property tax hike over the objections of the state’s attorney general. “He has a clear interest in proving the attorney general wrong,” said Schaffer. “While the massive tax increase bill was passing, the … [Read more...]

Another Big Thumbs Up to Fred

Pejman Yousefzadeh (PJ, for short) over at Red State writes an eloquent endorsement for Fred Thompson to be our next President (H/T El Presidente). Let me officially second his statement:Many writers, in praising Thompson, have indicated that one of the more laudable things about his candidacy is that he is more interested in doing something than he is in being somebody. This is true. Ambition is a good thing to have but far too many politicians make ambition an end in and of itself. For Thompson, ambition is a means to an end--a means to implementing the policy positions he and other Reagan Republicans care about so deeply. That having been written, Thompson owes it to his supporters to vigorously campaign for the Presidency of the United … [Read more...]

New Wadhams Blog Welcomed

Colorado state Republican Party chair and political mastermind Dick Wadhams, whom I heard speak confidently and eloquently last night about the GOP's prospects in the upcoming presidential election, has introduced himself to the blogging world today with his first post on the Colorado GOP site - key quote:Democratic Candidate Ritter campaigned as a moderate, almost as a conservative, telling Colorado’s business community he was their ally and friend. Candidate Ritter was a farce. Now we know who the real Bill Ritter is. No doubt after this post, the Lefties will see further evidence of vast conspiracy between Wadhams and the independent, grassroots Ritter Watch blog. Of course, they have the prerogative to be wrong - and to waste … [Read more...]

Need a Break from Presidential Politics? Support Bob Schaffer

Are you tired of the give-and-take of Presidential primary politics? Are you a conservative Republican who needs to step back and take some time to consider whether or not you want to jump on the John McCain bandwagon? Do you want to help the Republican Party down ticket by supporting a candidate with integrity and independent conservative principles? Well, then... How about celebrating the 199th anniversary of Republican forefather Abraham Lincoln's birthday by giving a tangible contribution to Old Abe's legacy? How about showing support for a superb Colorado Republican while you let the national party work on getting back its conservative bearings? How about getting behind sending a candidate to Washington, DC, who … [Read more...]

Relief in Iowa: Huck Slipping, Fred Poised for Successful Showing

Good news in the Republican presidential race out of Iowa: the Huckster is fading, and the expectations game keeps Fred at a low enough profile to gear up for a strong third-place finish in the Hawkeye State:On the Republican side, among (833) likely voters, here are the numbers: Huckabee 28, Romney 25, Thompson 10, McCain 9, Paul 6, Giuliani 6. Among (418) highly likely voters, Romney leads with 28%, then Huckabee 25, Thompson 11, McCain 7, Paul 6, Giuliani 5, Tancredo 4. Plus there appear to be true signs of Fred-mentum (and here I thought I'd coined the phrase) after all. … [Read more...]

Time to Find That New Public School

Guest writers for the Rocky Mountain News have reminded us that now is the time for students & parents in Denver - and many other Colorado school districts - to get into the open enrollment game if you're looking for another public school for next year. What the writers didn't tell you - likely because they aren't aware of it - is that the School Choice for Kids website is the one-stop shop for Colorado families to find a school and navigate through open enrollment (more information here, too). Go check it out! … [Read more...]

Denver Teachers Union Backs Down on Autonomy Issue

I've been especially hard on the Denver teachers union (DCTA) lately, but when they do something (mostly) right it would be petty and disingenuous of me not to give credit where due. The Rocky Mountain News reports today that DCTA has decided to acquiesce to the requests of Bruce Randolph and Manual High School for autonomy from school district red-tape and negotiated work rules: … [Read more...]

Not-so-shocking News: Union Lawyers Caught Lying

Update: More on this story in today's Rocky Mountain News ... Here's the "dog bites man" story of the day: lawyers for the Colorado Education Association are caught telling a series of lies to stop teachers and leaders at Denver's Bruce Randolph School from obtaining autonomy from restrictive district red tape and union-negotiated work rules. Still, unsurprising as the news may be, it can be thoroughly instructive to read the actual memos and see just how far the union's legal team will go to mislead its own members. … [Read more...]
