Arvada West Republican Caucus: Romney Territory
From my own little corner of the Colorado caucus: I've just returned from a gathering of six Republican precincts held at Arvada West High School. The turnout of 141 shattered all records from recent memory, though probably was outdone by the Democrats who met on the other half of campus. If our six precincts are anywhere near representative of the state of Colorado, it's a lock for Romney. Romney Out: Let the Unifying Begin
Well, Mitt Romney's candidacy is over (but his political future may not be done). Not much more I can say that hasn't been repeated across the blogosphere in the past 20 hours or so. I have to say it's quite jarring to witness an overwhelming Romney win at my local caucus, and in the state of Colorado as a whole, and less than 48 hours later to see his campaign come to an end. But the former Massachusetts governor's withdrawal speech at CPAC only confirmed my confidence in him. The speech was full of class and grace and poise, but also resounded on the pre-eminent theme of victory in the GWOT. Date Set for Tax Hike Suit Showdown
Face the State has the latest on the court case requesting a vote of the people on Gov. Bill Ritter's statewide property tax increase:The State Board of Education, claiming that CDE is the wrong agency to be targeted, has asked the court to be removed as a defendant. Meanwhile, Ritter has sought to intervene as defendant. A Denver District Court hearing has been set for May 5. Dog Bites Man: “Left-Leaning” Group Attacks GOP Official
The Denver Post reports today:A watchdog group filed a complaint with the state's Independent Ethics Committee against Secretary of State Mike Coffman on Wednesday. The complaint is the first one filed with the committee since voters created it in 2006, said Colorado Ethics Watch director Chantell Taylor. It is also the latest complaint Ethics Watch, generally seen as left-leaning, has lodged with various agencies about Coffman, a Republican. [emphasis added] "Generally seen as left-leaning"? Dems’ “No-Strike” Bait-and-Switch a Boon to Ritter
The Democrats at the State Capitol are trying to pull one over on Colorado voters in an attempt to give cover to Gov. Bill Ritter's executive order that provides for the unionization of state employees. Startled by the Attorney General's revelation that his order could not prevent strikes, Ritter quickly and publicly agreed to support the concept of a no-strike law in the state legislature brought forward by Republicans. GOP Leaders Can’t Persuade Coffman to Stay Out of 6th CD
The latest from the jockeying to replace Tom Tancredo in the 6th Congressional District ... An insider source tells me that high-ranking party officials met with Secretary of State Mike Coffman yesterday in an attempt to dissuade him from entering the primary. Should Coffman resign, Gov. Ritter gets to appoint his replacement - figured to be Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, whom Coffman defeated in the statewide election last November. The fox then would be guarding the electoral henhouse. Coffman's great initiative to ensure all Colorado voters have valid identification? Tancredo’s Romney Endorsement Suggests Future Political Plans
As expected, Rep. Tancredo officially has bowed out of the presidential race, and is endorsing not Fred Thompson but Mitt Romney. Since Romney is favored by many of the state's leading Republicans, this tells me that Tancredo has his eye on running for office again in 2010. Conventional wisdom is that he will plan to take on Senator Ken Salazar. How far Tancredo's endorsement of Romney will go in corralling the necessary support for a Senate campaign remains to be seen.
