Liberal Covets PBS Programming?

Liberal columnist Jason Salzman writes in the Saturday Rocky Mountain News:By the time Paul Chesser arrived at the "Environmental Hysteria" cocktail party thrown in his honor Feb. 11 at the "penthouse" of the Independence Institute in Golden, he was feeling pretty good about his day in the Denver media. In his briefing to Republican lawmakers earlier, Chesser had trashed Gov. Bill Ritter's plan to fight global warming, and an article with his views would appear in the next day's Post. Chesser, of the conservative John Locke Foundation, had yakked in the morning with KOA's Mike Rosen. The conservative blogosphere had dutifully transcribed Chesser's anti-environmental message, and he was booked on John Andrews' KNUS talk radio … [Read more...]

Islamist GOP Candidate in Denver? It May Be Time for a Do-Over

Joshua has a very disturbing report that took me by surprise:The Republicans in State House District 6 in Denver are about to make a terrible mistake. At their Assembly on March 1, they nominated a terror apologist, and an avowed enemy of Israel, with no credible conservative credentials as their candidate to succeed Rep. Andrew Romanoff. Her name is Rima Barakat Sinclair. Joshua has all the details and the links to make his case. It's not the religion, but the Leftist affiliations, the moral equivalence, the deceptive behavior, and the dissembling rhetoric that Ms. Barakat Sinclair should have to answer clearly for. Rather than rehashing it all, I would say that if there is any truth and substance in this report, that Joshua's … [Read more...]

For Dead Guvs, Ignorance on Arvada Statehouse Race is Bliss

The Dead Governors don't think the Republicans have a strong candidate in House District 27 (Arvada), and are putting their faith in Rep. Sara Gagliardi to win as a liberal incumbent. To borrow from a couple cliches, ignorance may be bliss, but what they don't know may come back to hurt them. Not that I'm predicting some sort of sweeping landslide of Republican state legislative victories in 2008. I'm too much of a realist for that. But you have to wonder if the Democrats' legislative majority is getting a little complacent, as their apologists repeatedly fail to notice how out of touch they are on issue after issue down at the statehouse. … [Read more...]

High-Ranking Democrat: Property Tax Hike Not Just for Schools

One year ago today, Gov. Bill Ritter announced his "Children's Amendment," which ended up passing as part of the 2007 School Finance Act - effectively raising property taxes on homes and businesses without a constitutional vote of the people. Now comes the revelation from a high-ranking member of Ritter's own Democratic Party: The money generated from the tax hike isn't just to fund schools. The chairman of the powerful Joint Budget Committee has acknowledged on the record that a sweeping statewide property-tax hike pushed through last year by his fellow Democrats will subsidize new social programs--not just schools, as originally promised. Democrat Bernie Buescher, of Grand Junction, said in a JBC meeting this week that some of the … [Read more...]

Jeffco GOP Assembly: Recap & Reflection on Renewed Hopes

At Saturday's Jefferson County Republican Assembly, the person who got the biggest ovation was a self-proclaimed Democrat. A bad sign? Not at all. The Democrat was Rose Moniak, a courageous elderly lady who seconded the nomination of Scott Storey for a second term as District Attorney. The victim of a heinous crime that nearly took her life, Moniak had the highest praise for Storey's personal diligence and compassion as a prosecutor. Storey was emotionally touched by the introduction, and Moniak was emotionally touched by the warm, prolonged standing ovation from the Assembly crowd. Moniak was also one of the personal stories from the crowd that U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer addressed from the podium. Schaffer has really honed the … [Read more...]

Without Republican Support, Car Fee Hike One Too Many for Ritter

This morning the Denver Post reports that Gov. Bill Ritter is dropping the "hot potato" that would have hit all Colorado families with another $100 in vehicle registration fees. Of course, it's important to note that it was Ritter who took the potato out of the oven after it had been thoroughly cooked by his blue ribbon commission. Seems the governor was unable to get a single Republican in the legislature to sign on to "the bait and switch con game." Kudos to the Republicans for showing some taxpayer-friendly backbone on this one. Meanwhile, the fact that Ritter is unwilling to push his fee hike forward without a Republican co-sponsor shows just how scared Democratic leaders are of being recognized as the party of tax … [Read more...]

Hillman Presents Reasonable Case for Conservatives to Back McCain

Former state senate Republican leader Mark Hillman, an indisputable and articulate conservative, as well as a respected friend, has written a piece for Backbone America titled "If Principles Matter, So Does McCain." Follow the link to follow his reasoning, but most notable is his conclusion:Conservatives generally recognize short-sighted self-indulgence when practiced by others. Now many conservatives are in danger of practicing a suicidal self-indulgence of their own. We must put aside self-pity and frustration and do what we always have done: choose the right and responsible course for our country. If instead we purposefully withhold our votes to gratify our personal pride and prejudice, the surrendered freedoms, suffocating tax … [Read more...]

Dem Leaders Weakly Downplay Voters’ Superdelegate Anxieties

An interesting piece in today's Denver Post: "Democrats vouch for superdelegate system." On a day where Hillary looks to make a comeback in the presidential primary with some critical wins, further muddling the contest between her and Obama, the possibility looms that the un-democratic superdelegate system will decide the party's leadership. So it's interesting to see Democrat leaders in Colorado try to downplay a potential crisis to their confused constituents:U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Golden, a superdelegate who supports Barack Obama, acknowledged that the large number of automatic delegates worried the Obama campaign because Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton have had long-term relationships with so many party … [Read more...]

Anti-Public Records Bill Begs Question: What are Colorado Dems Hiding?

Today's Denver Post updates readers on a Democrat-sponsored bill in the Colorado statehouse that would erect more barriers between citizens and public records:A draft of [House Majority Leader Alice] Madden's [D - Boulder] bill proposes several changes in addition to requiring proof of citizenship, among them: • Citizens would have to deliver requests by hand or by certified mail instead of through a wider variety of methods allowed under current law. • More of lawmakers' e- mails — such as information from and about constituents — could be exempt. • Agencies would more easily be able to take an extra seven days to respond to requests. • Agencies could refuse to release records that contain confidential information … [Read more...]
