Some people might chalk off my decision to post this as the result of repressed bourgeois greed and envy, or as a sign I've joined the Left-wing class warfare crusade, but I assure you it's neither. As an ardent supporter of the benefits of a free-exchange capitalist system, I am content to know that companies manufacture expensive automobiles and that consumers are willing and able to buy them. Yet there is so much that I despise about the televised ad campaigns depicting youthful upper middle-class people surprising their loved ones with a red bow-topped luxury car in the driveway on Christmas morn. Every year, my angst grows toward these commercials. And today the Washington Times reports how real people participate in the … [Read more...]
Drawing the Lines on Christmas
Cal Thomas is the closest to a modern-day, old-style Christian prophet that can be found anywhere in American news pages. His recent column on the kerfuffle over public celebrations of the Christmas holiday is a must-read for every believer. While you don't have to agree with every conclusion, he makes an excellent point: The effort by some cable TV hosts and ministers to force commercial establishments into wishing everyone a "Merry Christmas" might be more objectionable to the One who is the reason for the season than the "Happy Holidays" mantra required by some store managers. I have never understood why so many Christians feel the need to see and hear "Merry Christmas" proclaimed to them at stores by people who may not believe … [Read more...]
Post Beats Up Christian Group Straw Man
Note to the Denver Post editorial staff - before publishing an editorial, please take the time to verify the simple facts. Today's piece in question began: We're perplexed by a boycott of Target Corp. organized by two Christian groups that are angry with the retailer for forcing its employees to wish customers "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas." Especially because it isn't true. Unfortunately, the Post meant only that Target has no such policy. They didn't point out that the boycott against Target has nothing to do with a policy regarding what employees can or cannot say. What a good reason to be perplexed! The Post should be more careful about giving a misleading impression. Instead, they could have read what the … [Read more...]
Hurrah for CHRISTMAS
During this past week, I renewed my determination to make a conscious effort this yuletide season to keep Christ & Christmas as prominent as possible. I don't want to get caught in the trap of the bland, insipid, politically correct "Happy Holidays" & "Seasons Greetings". Won't you of like faith join me in the simple task of wishing store clerks, wait staff, and other strangers you meet a clear, kind, and bold "Merry Christmas"? Along these lines, I spotted a couple stories this morning that I wanted to share. Apparently, government agencies are starting to get it better than many of the corporate retailers who profit so handsomely this time of year? Three cheers to the Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - for whom there has been little … [Read more...]
Food for Grateful Thought
President Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation (October 20, 1864): It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with his guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad, and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our own household. It has also pleased our Heavenly Father to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their campus, and our sailors on the rivers and seas, with unusual health. He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while he has opened to us new sources of wealth, and has crowned the labor of our workingmen in every department of industry with abundant rewards. Moreover, he … [Read more...]
Book Review: Clarity and Backbone for a Forgotten Resolution
Paul Coughlin, No More Christian Nice Guy: When Being Nice - Instead of Good - Hurts Men, Women, and Children, (Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 2005). 224 pages. Foreword by Dr. Laura Schlessinger When I was not too much younger, I made the same half-hearted New Year's resolution for several years running: "No more Mister Nice Guy." Certain friends balked at the expression, not sure they wanted to see one of my few favorable qualities evaporate. They always got their wish, as the resolution typically died about January 3. I have to say I didn't know quite what I was looking for until I forged my way through a new book recently. Packed with potent medicine for the timid male of faith, Paul Coughlin's No More Christian Nice Guy … [Read more...]
Rita Evacuees Await Return
From a Christian camp director in Louisiana - affiliated with the work of Operation Renewed Hope - who is housing evacuees from the areas most directly hit by Rita's fury this morning: I thought I would give you all an update while we still have power. We currently have around 250 evacuees housed at the camp. Our staff is doing a great job taking care of them and feeding them. The people have been very patient and understanding in the midst of a difficult situation. We are still a couple of hours away from the strongest part of Rita hitting us but we are not expecting too much damage. Most of the folks with us are from the hardest hit areas in South Louisiana and Texas. Many of them will be going home to nothing. We are already … [Read more...]
The Bible or the Axe: A Review
The following review is made possible by the hard work of Stacy Harp at Mind and Media. Your mind trapped in a world that ends at the United States borders? Living a life of relative comfort and ease? William O. Levi's The Bible or the Axe might be just the wake-up call the average Christian in America may need. The Bible or the Axe recounts Levi's early life journey, which began with a large, tightly-knit, strongly-rooted Messianic Jewish family in east Africa before he endured persecution at the hands of Sudan's Islamic regime in the 1980s and ultimately escaped to the United States. He later founded Operation Nehemiah, a mission still actively helping the Christian community in Sudan rebuild its broken walls. Levi tells … [Read more...]
