From CBS4 Denver, foot-in-mouth State Senator David Schultheis (R-Colorado Springs) has pulled a surprise and announced he’s not running for re-election in 2010.
Does this make former blogger and self-proclaimed “big tent” Republican candidate Tom McDowell the frontrunner in Senate District 9?
It’s no secret that Tom once was a frequent visitor to this blog, and has left his share of comments that speak for themselves. All I can say is he seems to like to pick fights over imagined disputes. If nominated and elected, I hope he shows more tact than his predecessor.

Dear Jesse
I was wrong. It didn’t take me 30 minutes to discover your name. It took me 30 seconds.
We are going to have a little heart to heart talk, and this is it.
For reasons that totally escape me, you have tried to damage my project from the beginning. By now, it is apparent to all but you that I intend to run it in a totally neutral manner, and that what I am doing might actually be good for everyone.
You seem so focused on your own political views and candidates that you don’t believe that what is good for everyone is necessarily good for you. In your world, the term “collateral damage” is meaningless. You pretend that by attacking one Republican, you have no impact on any other. It doesn’t work that way.
You have made it clear that you don’t think the index is good for you and you (and your friends) have attacked it relentlessly. First, you complained to Ben. Then Laura Teal did her thing, and I made it clear that I was confident of your involvement.
You then sent me an email asking what my agenda was with the index, and I answered truthfully with the comment that it wasn’t in my interest to mistreat you. I guess you assumed that because I told you that, I would tolerate anything. Your reaction was to shove a RINO essay down my throat and have CCP endorse it THE VERY NEXT DAY.
Every week, you or your friends have done something to disrupt the tranquility that needs to exist for my effort to succeed. On Saturday, I commented that every blog was moving in the right direction. Your VERY NEXT two entries were obvious attempts to prove me wrong and to draw a comment.
You got your comment. Now you are getting more.
If I am willing to take on the most powerful organization in the state-the Bar Association-it should be clear that I can easily turn my attention toward you, your friends, and any candidate who is foolish enough not to keep you and your friends at arms length.
You have two choices. You can either shut [your Web site] down, or you can operate it in a mature, non destructive manner. As far as I am concerned, there is no middle road. If you try to take one, try to take me on even in the slightest way, I can promise you will regret it, and you will regret it for years. That goes for your friends as well, including Laura.

Maniac McDowell says
So, what? We’re going to have Tom McDowell wandering the state capitol accusing GOP legislators of shuffling around items on his desk to “push the social conservative agenda” if he wins?
I can see it now: “MIKE KOPP, I LEFT 6 PENS ON MY DESK WHEN I LEFT YESTERDAY AND NOW THERE ARE ONLY 5 THIS MORNING!! I KNOW YOU STOLE ONE TO THROW ME OFF SO YOU COULD SHOVE YOUR PRO-LIFE POLICIES DOWN MY THROAT!! NAMECALLER! RELIGIOUS RIGHT! DAMN SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE BLOGGERS!!!! AAAGGGHHHHH!!!! “
