Next Time, Just Answer: “The Republicans”

From an April 2006 online forum to publicize his new book Painting the Map Red: Cleveland, Ohio: Who has a better chance of winning in 2006, the Republicans or the Cleveland Indians? Hugh Hewitt: I am not even sure why we are playing the 2006 season given the Tribe's overwhelming talent. Perhaps it is just for the joy of embarrassing the Yankees and Red Sox. Mr. Hewitt's baseball braggadocio certainly has abated in the past two months, both on air and on the blog. While I have no love lost for the AL East powerhouses, perhaps it's time to compare how the Indians are faring thus far with their division rivals, the Detroit Tigers. Tiger fans like myself have long awaited a season such as the way this one has unfolded so far, coming … [Read more...]

Graduation Day

Eight months of high-quality speakers, challenging exercises, and tremendous fellowship culminate today with graduation for the 2006 class of the Leadership Program of the Rockies. Are you interested in becoming a conservative leader with greater insights into the benefits of free market capitalism? I highly recommend you apply for next year's class. You won't regret it. … [Read more...]

Spell-Blogged

Editor's Note: This post is officially certified to be free of any spelling errors. Spelling geeks of the world, unite! Our event is now officially a phenomenon. The 79th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee finals takes over the primetime airwaves tonight on ABC (8-10 PM Eastern, 7-9 PM Central & Mountain). Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined the event achieving such status and acclaim. Yesterday's rounds whittled down the record-size field of 275 to fewer than 100 as 4th-round action picks up live on ESPN at Noon Eastern (10 AM Mountain). Colorado's Kayla Hudson is still in the mix. For the primetime finals, 10 to 15 competitors should be left standing. The question is: how many Americans will be watching? No, … [Read more...]

Congratulations, Brant!

After nearly 3 weeks of waiting the news is finally in: my Hillsdale College friend Brant Luther has won his primary election by a whopping 13 votes. (See previous post for background.) With such a whopping victory under his belt, Brant would seem to need a new nickname. Food for thought.... … [Read more...]

Holtzman-Spradley Win Key Endorsement

They say you can't get them active in politics too young. Little Virtus gives the "thumbs up" (look closely) to Marc Holtzman and Lola Spradley to be Colorado's next governor and lieutenant governor - along with Mom, Dad, and "Winks" the Elephant All in good fun and good spirits. Thanks to Marc and Lola for so graciously taking a minute to pose for the camera with Mrs. Virtus, myself, and our three-month-old gem (the real star of the photo, according to her dad) this morning at the 7th Congressional District Republican Assembly. Only one week 'till the GOP state convention in Colorado Springs! … [Read more...]

Truly Flattered

I'm amazed how much this Web site has become a curiosity. Jason Bane, the face of the Dead Governors' site, has included Mount Virtus in his inquiry into why the right side of Colorado's blogosphere seems less active for 5280 Magazine: Of all of the conservative, politically-active blogs out there in Colorado, Blog It Right and Mt. Virtus spend the most time talking politics on a local level. Mt. Virtus, run by a guy who works at the conservative Independence Institute, probably does the best job of keeping focused on local politics, but he sometimes goes weeks without posting something new.... It’s also interesting to compare the traffic to some of these blogs. On the conservative side, Blog it Right only averages about 28 visitors … [Read more...]

If April Is Any Indication

If April is any indication, 2006 figures to be a happier baseball season at Mount Virtus than in the dismal climes of the Northern Alliance or the deluded braggadocio of Hugh Hewitt. Here are the American League Central standings as the regular season's first month has come to a close: Chi White Sox 17-7 (-) Detroit 16-9 (1.5 GB) Cleveland 13-12 (4.5 GB) Minnesota 9-15 (8.0 GB) Kansas City 5-17 (11.0 GB) Prognosticators and pundits may start to get a little uneasy, though a lot of baseball remains to be played. My Detroit Tigers, however, have given every evidence of finally turning it around this season with new manager Jim Leyland at the helm. After their best April since the historic 1984 championship season, the team … [Read more...]

Adventures in Podcasting

Three questions: 1) Have you ever wondered about the real facts of Colorado's education funding? 2) Have you ever wondered what this blogger's voice sounds like? 3) Do you want to hear me talk about Colorado's education funding anyway? If you answered yes to 1 or more of the above questions, please check out my new Podcast interview (requires MP3 player) with Jon Caldara, compliments of the Independence Institute's new IVoices Web site. … [Read more...]

Caucus Night

I can't do better on Caucus Night observations than Joshua - maybe NOT wearing a yarmulker helped me to blend in a bit. As far as not feeling like a fish out of water, I was pleased to see a few members of the 30-&-under crowd with me at the Arvada gathering of 5 precincts. The caucus was a disappointingly small affair ... enthusiasm at the GOP grassroots level is not exactly spilling over the brim. Hmm, go figure. There were 3 of us who showed up for my precinct (and a fourth by proxy). A couple of the other precincts had 6 to 8 people, and one other lady showed up to find out she was her precinct. I was elected by acclamation, along with the other three in my precinct, as a delegate to the Jefferson County Assembly. Unfortunately, … [Read more...]
