Quick Friday Jottings

The Democrat majority in the Colorado legislature revealed their close affinity to the abortion absolutist lobby Thursday. The six Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee killed a bill that would have held medical doctors liable for the abortions of viable human fetuses. It was a moderate measure designed to curb the uncommon but barbaric practice of killing an unborn child that could otherwise survive outside the mother's womb. But we know where the Democrat legislators stand on this issue, beholden as they are to a certain lobby. In less startling news, Ward Churchill is now under investigation for artistic copyright fraud. The habits developed in his professional life carry over into his money-making hobbies, as well. Should … [Read more...]

Florida Representative: Strong Feelings on Schiavo Case

Last night I sent out e-mails to 20 or so different Florida state legislators, with an ardent appeal on behalf of Terri Schiavo. Today I know at least one member of the Florida House of Representatives shares public concern. When you send out e-mails to public officials in a different state, for whom you can't vote and have almost zero likelihood of contributing time or money to help in one of their campaigns, it tends to be surprising that one of them would actually write you back. Unless they believe the issue you're writing about is so very important. My message: I am not a Florida resident, but after reviewing the facts of the Terri Schiavo case would earnestly exhort you to do all in your power to intervene on her behalf. … [Read more...]

Intervening on Terri’s Behalf

This is the first time I've blogged on this particular case. But the exigency of the circumstances - they will begin starving Terri Schiavo tomorrow (!) - has broken my silence. Blogs for Terri has put together the most concerted effort on her behalf. It is updated very regularly to let you know what you can do. Jared has done excellent work - migraine and all - to spread the call for action, and has also made one of the more clear and cogent arguments for keeping in her feeding tube. Hugh is publicizing the issue on his show today. A lot of leading figures in Florida, including Governor Jeb Bush, are working to find any legal option they can to rescue Terri. Besides adding your voice to those speaking up for a defenseless woman, … [Read more...]

Four Rules of Communication

Proverbs 27:17 "Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." As promised, I wanted to share some of what I learned at the recent Biblical Counseling Conference. The truths we learned were first applicable to me as a growing Christian, though they are also things I am now more equipped to share with others. Among the foundation stones are the four rules of communication, revealed in Ephesians 4:25-32. Just a little background first... 1. Believers can learn to solve problems biblically and build good relationships - especially for the husband-wife but in all aspects of life. 2. The Bible tells us some important facts about our communication. (James 3:2, Proverbs 18:21) 3. The book of Ephesians provides some tremendous help … [Read more...]

I’m Back

In case you hadn't noticed, I'd taken a prolonged hiatus from posting. While I was gone, Mount Virtus passed the one-year anniversary mark. A lot has changed since the first post last February, but I hope the commitment to quality remains the same. So why has the site been so quiet of late? I very recently spent a week at the Biblical Counseling Training Conference in Lafayette, Indiana, a positive and intense experience that has already brought me greater attention to two things: 1. The need for personal spiritual discipline and focused spiritual growth in my life; AND 2. The need for more serious spiritual interaction in the lives of those God has placed in my path. The conference was a tremendous experience and one I … [Read more...]

Abortionist Illogic

You can learn a lot from someone's response. Take this for example... abortionist William Hern of Boulder is aghast that the mortuary he had contracted with to receive "fetal remains" had in turn been taking those remains to the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church. In unveiling its "Memorial Wall for the Unborn," the parish recently announced that it had been receiving and burying the murdered babies since 2001. Hern alleges that Crist Mortuary violated a written contract, but Hern has also "declined to provide a copy of the contract." I think the story is best summed up by a quote in the Denver Post story from archdiocese spokesman Sergio Gutierrez: "It's puzzling, the confused messages being sent out. If they're not unborn … [Read more...]

Response from Telluride

From my recent post about the controversy in Telluride, I received a comment from the man under fire. I decided to give it more light by posting it here: Thank you for the kind words and thoughts. Here is an e-mail that we just sent out this morning. "Dear Friends, We have been informed that Telluride Ski and Golf Communications Director Maryhelyn Kirwan has begun a smear campaign against Al Heirich in an effort to divert attention away from the Telluride Cyberguide Family Posting controversy. This smear campaign is an effort to drive a wedge between our conservative Christian supporters and the Telluride Cyberguide. Do not let them do this. This issue is about nothing but our ability to notify parents and the subsequent (and … [Read more...]

A Call to Action

Rob at It'sComeDown2This has sent out a call to action in defense of one Al Heirich of Telluride, who runs a website to help people set up ski vacations. Mr. Heirich has apparently stepped on the toes of the politically correct police by posting the following information about the upcoming Gay Ski Week (read the WorldNetDaily article): Although this week should be fun for those not offended by alternative lifestyles, with scheduled events including: The Pleasure Hunt, The Blue Ball Dance, Drag Races and more, we are strongly suggesting that families concerned with exposing their children to the homosexual lifestyle and homosexual behavior schedule their vacations another time. Events are planned throughout the week in both towns … [Read more...]

Birthday Wishes

The temperature drops. Several inches of snowfall loom on the Western horizon. The signs are clear, there's no mistaking: it's my birthday all right. Christmas, New Year's, Ben's birthday... all in succession. My earliest claim to fame was being "First Baby of the Year" in Clarkston, Michigan, for 19__. (Bonus points to the reader - not a family member or longtime close friend - who can guess the year: your trivia for the day.) The last time I paid a visit to the old hometown was 2002, and it has transformed from a cozy small town to a full-fledged upscale suburban bedroom community along the Interstate between Detroit and Flint. If you've got to live along that corridor, Clarkston is a nice place to be... trust me. Anyway, I've … [Read more...]

Linking to the Origins Debate

Though it is not always the case, the debate between Darwinian evolutionary biologists and advocates of Intelligent Design can be very rich and insightful. Rand Simberg and John Mark Reynolds have started an exchange. We can only hope the dialogue continues. Reynolds has a lot of thoughtful and eloquent things to say - here's just a snippet to whet the appetite: I once was a theistic evolutionist. My faith did not demand I abandon Darwin, but my best reason did. Plato had more to do with changing my mind than Genesis. Still, if Genesis had motivated me, I see no reason to apologize for it. It is a book of great genius (see the previous post) and persons who dismiss it lightly are likely merely engaging in chronological snobbery, … [Read more...]
