Do You Believe in the Stork?

Paul Chesser reports that Colorado chemical engineer Ed Rademacher, Jr., shared a fact-based report with Montana state legislators that questioned the group promoting climate change policies in Montana and many other states. For his work, Mr. Rademacher was showered with shame and insult for daring to cast doubt on the prevailing Eco-Orthodoxy. This Montana legislator equated an engineer's skepticism about man-made climate change to a belief that the stork delivers babies It's the response of one state Rep. Sue Dickenson that makes this story interesting. Here's the key excerpt: … [Read more...]

Big Labor Has Ritter Running Scared

Writing over at Politics West, my Independence Institute colleague Jessica Corry ((no, we didn't collaborate) calls out Gov. Bill Ritter's plea for business and labor to get along as one-sided and politically motivated:A battle over labor issues could cost Ritter and the Democratic Party serious political capital. And with national Democrats coming to Denver this August for their national convention, the last thing Ritter needs is an extremist union agenda to impede his party's effort to appeal to moderate small- and medium-sized business owners. It's no surprise really then that Ritter is being ignored. Cross posted at Ritter Watch … [Read more...]

Sharf’s Challenge Highlights Rima Barakat Sinclair’s Dissimulation

With today's coverage in the Rocky Mountain News, the developing Republican primary in Denver's House District 6 has launched into public view:A Middle Eastern native running for a state House seat faces a challenge from a blogger who called her "a terror apologist and an avowed enemy of Israel with no credible conservative credentials." Republican Rima Barakat Sinclair said she has been unfairly labeled because she is a Muslim of Palestinian descent. "I absolutely deny that," she said, of claims she supports terrorism. "What is behind that? Where is the proof? This is nothing but mudslinging." In case you hadn't found it yet, here is the proof. (Note: Rima Barakat Sinclair is NOT a victim.) The 5-minute YouTube video alone, which … [Read more...]

Speak Out for Florida Taxpayers!

A note from my Independence Institute colleague Amy Oliver:Our conservative brethren in Florida need our help and time is of the essence. Right now TABOR type legislation is being debated by a special Constitutional committee comprised of 25 private citizens, not elected officials. They have the power to put a positive version of TABOR on the ballot as a proposed amendment to the state constitution. The proposal is called the "Taxpayer Protection Amendment" or CP-45. The vote will be on Friday so if you could take just a few minutes to email (email address is below) Florida's Constitutional committee about how TABOR has been beneficial in Colorado and send this email/suggestion along to some of your friends to do the same it would help … [Read more...]

“If we can’t even cut waste, fraud and abuse out of the budget, we shouldn’t be here”

Those are the words of Republican state senator Steve Johnson, as the Democrats in the legislature seek to increase the discretionary budgets for State Board of Education members to dine in style ($200 - $300 a meal for catering from Pour la France?), and enjoy other amenities. Despite what some say, such expenditures cannot best be characterized as "prudent." There's outrage when people learn about this kind of stuff, though many in the public are tuned out, overwhelmed, or just plain cynical. … [Read more...]

Ritter Throws Weight Behind Big Labor, Says: “Holster Your Weapons”

Yesterday we learned that Big Labor has pulled out some more big guns to blast a hole in Colorado's economy, in the form of five new anti-business ballot initiatives. Supporters of right-to-work - who are well on their way to getting their measure on the ballot - and union bosses - who appear to be calling their bluff - may be loading up for a real duel, High Noon-style. It didn't take long for Governor Bill Ritter to come riding into town, telling everyone to "holster your weapons":Hoping to avoid an ugly confrontation between business and labor this fall, Gov. Bill Ritter wants the two sides to withdraw their competing ballot measures, his spokesman said Tuesday. "The governor believes the best thing for all of Colorado would be if … [Read more...]

State Democrats’ Budget Extravagance Out of Touch with Man on the Street

The clever crew at Colorado Senate News took questions about the Democrats' state budget to the man on the street and got some predictably disgruntled responses:Just under $700,000 to give more prison inmates their GEDs? How about another $20,000 for the state's wine promotions board so it can promote--what else--wine? Or, $676,000 for salary hikes to the state agency that runs Medicaid health coverage for the poor? And then there's $150,000 in legal fees to defend the governor against a lawsuit charging him with pushing through last year's property-tax hike in violation of the state constitution. Those and other line items in the Democrat-authored 2008-09 budget, now pending before the Senate, were put to the public today when … [Read more...]

Pennsylvania State of Mind: Support Chris Hackett for Congress

Seldom do you see me declare support for a Congressional candidate outside Colorado - mainly because time is a limiting factor. But because I used to live in Pennsylvania, and because this one is a no-brainer for conservative friends of limited government, I wanted to pass it on. Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District should be represented by a conservative, but it's not. A scandal surrounding the grievous moral failings of former Republican incumbent Don Sherwood deservedly gave the seat to liberal Democrat professor Chris Carney. But now that our side has a good candidate - Chris Hackett - it's time to win the seat back. The problem is Chris Hackett has a primary with a GOP establishment candidate who is not so reliable on … [Read more...]
