How to Make Yourself More Appealing to Prospective Employers

Are you hoping to secure a new job? Are you struggling to move forward with your applications? Are you willing to put the work in to achieve your goals? If your answer to these questions is yes, now is the time to switch up your approach. Instead of doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for the best result, you need to take control of the situation. There are so many ways for you to make yourself a more appealing candidate, so it is important that you are embracing every opportunity that comes your way. If you are wondering how to do this, you should begin by taking on board the following ten steps. With any luck, they will help you to create an application that will knock the socks of your potential employers. They will also give you the tools you need to make it through the interview process and eventually secure the job of your dreams. What are you waiting for? Today could be the first day of the rest of your life!

Research the specific employers that you are applying to

Before you do anything else, it is vital that you research the specific employers that you are applying to because this will give you a chance to tailor your applications to meet their requirements. It is also a great opportunity for you to boost your self-confidence, as you will be able to find out whether or not you have what it takes to thrive in each role. Just remember to look beyond the original job listing. You need to visit company websites, social media platforms, and read any relevant news articles. You could even go so far as to set up a Google Alert for your favorite organizations, as this is a brilliant way for you to stay in the know.

Take control of your legal situation

The next step is to take control of your legal situation. If your citizenship is up in the air, it is essential that you resolve this issue as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will be difficult for your employers to see you as a long-term option. Instead, they may worry that they are bringing you into their team, for you to up and disappear in a matter of months. They may also be worried that they are compromising their own legal standing by hiring you. That is why you should secure the services of a lawyer for immigration to USA. With an expert on your side, you will be able to speed up the process considerably. You will also be able to understand your rights as a potential employee better and will be able to explain your position to your future bosses.

Secure your own driver’s license

Once you have your citizenship under control, you should get to work securing your own driver’s license. Driving is a fantastic opportunity for you to open up your options regarding employment. You might be surprised by the number of roles that require you to drive. Even if you are aiming for an office job, it is still possible that you will be asked to drive to and from meetings. Your ability to drive could also come in handy if you are asked to carry out a last minute drop off or if someone in your team needs to collect an important client from the airport. Why allow this minor detail to hold you back when it is so easy to get your license?

Look out for relevant experience

Another important step is to keep your eyes peeled for relevant experience. If you are currently struggling to get a job, it might be because you haven’t had enough exposure to your area of the industry. Luckily, you can overcome this issue by signing up for an internship or a work experience placement. Doing this is a fantastic opportunity for you to get your foot in the door and to build up your industry contacts. You never know, if you make a great impression, you might even be offered a permanent position. Or, it could be that one of your employers knows an industry peer who could use a hard worker with your newly developed skill set.

Take up interesting hobbies

Although it is important that you stay focused on your career, it is also important that you achieve a healthy work-life balance. Making the most of your free time could actually help you to get a job. Most employers want to know that they are taking on someone who is interesting, diverse, and a team player. Therefore, they may be put off your application if you don’t have any passions or pastimes. Conversely, your employers will be extremely impressed if you can share details of an interesting hobby you enjoy. It could involve anything from rock climbing to deep sea diving; the most important thing is that you establish yourself as a well-rounded candidate. If nothing else, this will give you something interesting to talk about during your interviews and will help you to distinguish yourself from the other candidates.

Evaluate your social media profiles

If you are on social media, this is another area of your life that you will need to consider. In this digital age, it is extremely common for employers to research their candidates online. If this happens to you, it is vital that your potential employers only find good things. That is why you should get to work taking down any problematic or controversial posts. You should also avoid sharing your complaints on social media and using it as a platform to attack other people. Instead, you should view your social media profiles as another opportunity to sell yourself. Perhaps you could post pictures of a fundraising activity you recently put together. Or, maybe you could share heartwarming snapshots of you and your loved ones. Although your accounts are unlikely to make or break your application, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Find exciting training opportunities

You can also hedge your bets by finding exciting training opportunities to enjoy. Even if you are yet to secure your perfect position, it is still a good idea to invest in your training. You could visit your local community center, sign up for an online course, or watch a useful TedTalks. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is that you are constantly learning and growing as a candidate. It could also be a good idea to reach out to other people in your area of the industry. Perhaps they would be willing to offer you a one on one session, as this could be an excellent opportunity for you to pick their brains and to identify any of the mistakes that you are making.

Be honest and open about your past mistakes

If your days of making mistakes are long gone, you may be reluctant to bring them up again. However, this could be an essential part of you getting your new job. Of course, you don’t want to bring up irrelevant errors that cast you in a negative light, but it might be that there are some mistakes that your potential employers need to know about. It could be that you have a criminal record, a disgruntled ex-employer, or a selection of bad grades. Instead of running from these problems, it is best to be upfront, and this is especially important if you have a good explanation that could potentially save the day. Maybe you have learned from your run-in with the law. Perhaps your ex-employer has a bad reputation and doesn’t get on with any of their workers. Or, it might be that you struggled through school but turned your life around at a later date. Whatever the case, it is your task to put a positive spin on past events so that they don’t ruin your hopes for a bright future.

Build up your self-esteem

In addition to this, you should focus your attention on building up your self-esteem. Confidence is infectious, so you need to make sure that you have a lot of it! While you don’t want to come across as arrogant, you also don’t want to unsettle your employers by radiating self-doubt. Although it might feel uncomfortable, you need to get used to singing your own praises. Why not write a list of all your specialist skills? You could also ask your loved ones for suggestions or reach out to old employers that you have a positive relationship with. Another great tip is to create a daily mantra that you can recite to yourself in front of the mirror. Then, you will have something to think about whenever you are struggling to write an application or complete a nerve–wracking interview.

Be as flexible as possible

Finally, you should endeavor to be as flexible as possible. There is no better way for you to win over your potential employers, as you will be proving yourself to be an amiable worker who is willing to go the extra mile. It might be that you are open to the idea of relocating. Or, it could be that you free up your schedule so that you are able to work odd hours. This could be a great opportunity for you to stand out for all the right reasons. However, this will only work if you strike the right balance between being flexible and being desperate. On the one hand, you want to impress your employers with your open-minded approach. On the other hand, you want to make it clear that you know your worth and feel comfortable saying no.
